Help connect Ivybridge

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ivybridge’s Slow Ways.

Woodland paths and open hillside are chosen over road sections. There are stiles involved and some quite steep sections. There is a community pub at Cornwood and very often an ice-cream van at Cadover Bridge....

Much of the route is on solid tracks (Princetown to Nun’s Cross and then Red Lake to Ivybridge) but there are a couple of sections where the path is undefined on the ground, some boggy places and stream crossings. Between the leat just past Nun’s Cross Farm and Plym Ford the path is very undefined and boggy once you’re up on the top (although fabulous views)....

Walk this route

The path down to the cycle path at the end of Ridge Park Road in Plympton is narrow and steep with a big drop to the left. I do wonder if this might be the better route anyway - it's more direct and the road is quiet. The final section is along the cycle path by the A38. While it is a segregated cycle path, it is right beside the very fast moving traffic and is quite unpleasant as a walker - not exactly unsafe (although it would be very re-assuring if there was a barrier between the path and the road)....

Walk this route

A good varied route, much along footpaths but also uses mostly quiet country lanes. On the day I walked it in late October I found the path across the field to the north of Brixton at the minor road SX 55093 52495 down to the village clear but muddy. This takes you diagonally across a ploughed, seeded and very muddy field. There was also a footpath closure north of Yealmpton at SX 57133 52523 into the village at SX 57706 51874....

Walk this route

It's very similar to Ivytot One, but my local friend adapted it slightly so that the route uses some quieter lanes and it's a little shorter too. The right of way at Earlscombe Farm (between Ivybridge and Ugborough) is a few metres east of the farm buildings, which is slightly different to the path on the OS Map. I reckon everyone in Ivybridge and Totnes who like to walk should give this a go....

Walk this route

It follows footpaths, bridleways, unmetalled roads & quiet, leafy, country lanes, with pavement sections in towns & villages. There is one slightly tricky road crossing of the B3196 near Kittaford Cross but no walking along any busy roads. It then follows quiet lanes & footpaths to Ugborough. The route then follows a combination of quiet lanes & unmetalled roads to Harberton (which has a pub also) & then on to Totnes....

Walk this route

This is an alternative route for Ivykin one, which it largely follows but avoiding a section of main road leading out of Ivybridge & an access issue near Loddiswell. The route continues to follow the Erme-Plym Trail along a footpath, leading to unmetalled road, beside the river to Lower Keaton. After a short road section it follows cross-field footpaths (kept beautifully clear by the farmer) to Strode where it diverges from the E-P Trail. From Strode it follows part of NCN28 cycle route along quiet lanes for a short while then passes through Modbury. The route necessitates walking on a short section of main road but there is a slow speed limit through the village & a partial one-way system so it felt safe. From there it follows quiet, but quite steep in places, lanes to Combe Royal Farm then an unmetalled road to the top of Kingsbridge....

This is another alternative route for Ivykin one, which, like Ivykin two, it largely follows but avoiding a section of main road leading out of Ivybridge & an access issue near Loddiswell. It follows footpaths, bridleways, unmetalled roads & quiet lanes. The route continues to follow the Erme-Plym Trail along a footpath, leading to unmetalled road, beside the river to Lower Keaton. From Strode it follows part of NCN28 cycle route along quiet lanes for a short while then passes through Modbury. The route continues along cross-field footpaths to Babland Farm (cattle in last field) & rejoins NCN28 along quiet lanes. It then follows quiet, but quite steep in places, lanes to Combe Royal Farm then an unmetalled road to the top of Kingsbridge....

I currently wouldn’t recommend this route as there is a potential access issue at Loddiswell - fixed road closed signs on the road over Hatch Bridge, although the road was not physically blocked, cars were using it & there was no indication a traffic order. The route follows the Erne-Plym Trail as far as Strode. Having crossed the footbridge after Traine there is a prominent permissive waymark with the actual route (up steep field) not obviously marked at all. However, as above it wasn’t physically closed to traffic with two cars passing while I contemplated my move, so I decided to try it. If this is legally closed to all traffic (including pedestrians) then I can’t verify the route so waiting for clarification. The train station at Ivybridge is a little walk out of town to the start of the route but follows foot/cycle way & pavement....
