Help connect Princetown

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Princetown’s Slow Ways.

They chose to walk on the round reservoir path rather than take the bridleway above Beechcroft and Narrator plantations. The round reservoir path runs between the road and the reservoir edge avoiding the many cars and cyclists that were using the road. They assessed the route as safe for most and highlighted challenges/obstacles on the route including road traffic, fallen trees on the path around the reservoir, uneven terrain with lots of loose stones and rocks during the ascent from Burrator, and livestock (particularly cows and ponies with calves and foals). Key features from the route include Burrator reservoir and its dam, South Hessary tor which you can climb up and discover a metal creature, and other great views including Plymouth Sound and Bodmin Moor!...

We checked this route on a hot and dry Saturday, as part of wider efforts to create the Slow Ways National Parks Trail. It certainly makes a great leg for the trial. Someone might know of a better west-east crossing of the Moor, but in terms of views, mix of places, distinct paths, ease of navigation, directness and avoidance of bog - this must be a good contender.. This is a solid route that largely follows the Two Moors Way and the Dartmoor Way High Moor Link, so it is reasonably way marked. Between 1km East of Dartmeet and just west of Ponsworthy the route sticks to quiet lanes instead. This means you miss out on the delightful view of Shap Tor but also the likelihood of getting wet feet in the valley 500m to its west.. 1) Between Jordan and Ponsworthy the route on the ground follows a riverside path, a small distance to the east of the right of way marked on OS maps. It's obvious where to go when you get there.....

Much of the route is on solid tracks (Princetown to Nun’s Cross and then Red Lake to Ivybridge) but there are a couple of sections where the path is undefined on the ground, some boggy places and stream crossings. Between the leat just past Nun’s Cross Farm and Plym Ford the path is very undefined and boggy once you’re up on the top (although fabulous views)....

From there it's fairly simple although in the later forests, around Fernworthy, there's a lot of deforestation so all the maps are a bit inaccurate in the size of the forests. But once you make it to Chagford it's a beautiful little town with a great camping shop for getting any new supplies....

Walk this route

The route follows the Dartmoor Way High Moor link (DWHML) (technically the plotted route follows a bridleway but the DWHML is the walked route). At Hexworthy the route joins minor country lanes & past the Forest Inn. The route continues on minor lanes & footpaths to Dartmeet, where there is a café in the car park. The slow way follows the road but it’s not too busy (even in August) & for the most part you can walk on verge. Dropping down into the River Dart valley the way follows footpaths through fields & woodland & then on minor roads into Ashburton....
