Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Kingsbridge’s Slow Ways.

A good walk, mainly on small quiet roads but a few stretches across fields with gates and stiles. There is a small, pop-up basic campsite as you leave Kingsbridge on the left side. Great views across the Kingsbridge Ria....

This is an alternative route for Ivykin one, which it largely follows but avoiding a section of main road leading out of Ivybridge & an access issue near Loddiswell. The route continues to follow the Erme-Plym Trail along a footpath, leading to unmetalled road, beside the river to Lower Keaton. After a short road section it follows cross-field footpaths (kept beautifully clear by the farmer) to Strode where it diverges from the E-P Trail. From Strode it follows part of NCN28 cycle route along quiet lanes for a short while then passes through Modbury. The route necessitates walking on a short section of main road but there is a slow speed limit through the village & a partial one-way system so it felt safe. From there it follows quiet, but quite steep in places, lanes to Combe Royal Farm then an unmetalled road to the top of Kingsbridge....

This is another alternative route for Ivykin one, which, like Ivykin two, it largely follows but avoiding a section of main road leading out of Ivybridge & an access issue near Loddiswell. It follows footpaths, bridleways, unmetalled roads & quiet lanes. The route continues to follow the Erme-Plym Trail along a footpath, leading to unmetalled road, beside the river to Lower Keaton. From Strode it follows part of NCN28 cycle route along quiet lanes for a short while then passes through Modbury. The route continues along cross-field footpaths to Babland Farm (cattle in last field) & rejoins NCN28 along quiet lanes. It then follows quiet, but quite steep in places, lanes to Combe Royal Farm then an unmetalled road to the top of Kingsbridge....

Walk this routeI currently wouldn’t recommend this route as there is a potential access issue at Loddiswell - fixed road closed signs on the road over Hatch Bridge, although the road was not physically blocked, cars were using it & there was no indication a traffic order. The route follows the Erne-Plym Trail as far as Strode. Having crossed the footbridge after Traine there is a prominent permissive waymark with the actual route (up steep field) not obviously marked at all. However, as above it wasn’t physically closed to traffic with two cars passing while I contemplated my move, so I decided to try it. If this is legally closed to all traffic (including pedestrians) then I can’t verify the route so waiting for clarification. The train station at Ivybridge is a little walk out of town to the start of the route but follows foot/cycle way & pavement....

Leaving Kingsbridge it follows pavement or quiet road leading to a public byway. The route then follows quiet country lanes to Sherford....

It follows public footpaths, bridleway, unmetalled roads & quiet minor lanes - even in half-term holiday there wasn’t much traffic on these back lanes. The route crosses back over the A381, which it follows for a very short distance on good wide verge before turning onto a quiet lane at Stanborough Hundred. From East Allington the route again follows quiet lanes before turning onto a public footpath, following a hard track to Buckland-Tout-Saints - great views over the South Devon AONB with distant glimpses of the sea....

The route follows quiet country lanes out of Kingsbridge - even in half term only a couple of cars passed - & has some pretty steep gradients. The route again follows a quiet lane before taking a public footpath towards Batson. Past the pretty hamlet of Batson the route follows a footpath - a little boggy at start - through trees around Shadycombe then pavements into Salcombe (passing the stop for the bus back to Kingsbridge)....

East Allington and Blackawton both have good refreshment opportunities (pub and shop), which are very handy on a long walk. There is a good network of rights of way that could offer a more direct route, but only by missing out Blackawton so I haven’t suggested an alternative....

At the start point in Kingsbridge (bus station/information centre) there are public toilets and cafes....
