Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this from Halwell to Kingsbridge. Halwell (& Kingsbridge for that matter) is on a regular bus service between Totnes & Salcombe, so very easy to get to.

It’s a great walk. It has some stiles and steep gradients, typical for the area, so not accessible for all, but a scenic route with lots of variation. It follows public footpaths, bridleway, unmetalled roads & quiet minor lanes - even in half-term holiday there wasn’t much traffic on these back lanes. It crosses the A381 (single carriageway) in a couple of places so care is needed then.

The first 100 metres or so is on pavement beside the A381 then a bit of verge before crossing over (in 30mph zone at this point), to get onto the minor road towards Farmstone (photo looking back towards Halwell). The route then follows a public footpath through fields. Cattle in first field at time walked. Lovely section through meadow. The last field had a maize crop across it (reported to highway authority) but the crop was still low so not a difficulty at time & hopefully should be cleared soon.

The route crosses back over the A381, which it follows for a very short distance on good wide verge before turning onto a quiet lane at Stanborough Hundred. It then follows unmetalled or minor lanes & a rather lovely bridleway through fields & woods to East Allington. Pub in East Allington.

From East Allington the route again follows quiet lanes before turning onto a public footpath, following a hard track to Buckland-Tout-Saints - great views over the South Devon AONB with distant glimpses of the sea.

Finishing on quiet lanes to Kingsbridge, with pavement sections in town. Lots of refreshment opportunities!

A really enjoyable walk that felt far from the madding crowd even during busy holiday season in this beautiful area of the South Hams.
