Help connect Halwell

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Halwell’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

The slow way follows a variety of field paths, holloways & quiet country lanes. The only major road encountered was the A3122, which the route crosses then follows the wide verge for a very short distance near Totnes Cross, & again crosses near Collaton Cross. Otherwise the road sections are on very quiet country lanes until into Dartmouth itself. The route continues along quiet lanes (one short footpath cutting off a corner through a meadow at Capton Cross)....

Walk this route

It follows public footpaths, bridleway, unmetalled roads & quiet minor lanes - even in half-term holiday there wasn’t much traffic on these back lanes. The route crosses back over the A381, which it follows for a very short distance on good wide verge before turning onto a quiet lane at Stanborough Hundred. From East Allington the route again follows quiet lanes before turning onto a public footpath, following a hard track to Buckland-Tout-Saints - great views over the South Devon AONB with distant glimpses of the sea....

Walk this route

One section, leading northwestwards across the River Wash to Beer Leigh cross via Middle Washbourne was pretty muddy on the day I walked it (see photos - unfortunately rotated when uploaded). Up on the ridge from Beer Leigh cross towards Bow was a fantastic old lane and would have great views I’m sure! (If the Middle Washbourne section is too muddy an alternative would be to continue on the lane towards Lower Washbourne and take the public footpath through Granary Farm, which follows good, hard farm tracks to rejoin the ridge road - I detoured here to check. Field gates and one pedestrian gate but no stiles.)....

Walk this route

When passable it's going to be a fantastic walk, albeit not accessible: you'd need to be both able bodied and physically fit. I might come back later in the year and give it a proper review. But an alternative route form Halwell to Totnes is probably also needed....
