Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

18 May 2022 Spring

A great route, very enjoyable despite low cloud & rain obscuring the views on the day I walked it. Transport links are good, with a regular and reliable bus service from Totnes.
The route largely follows unmetalled ‘green’ lanes from Halwell to Bow. Mostly in great condition and easy to walk. Lots of wildlife and beautiful hedgerows.
One section, leading northwestwards across the River Wash to Beer Leigh cross via Middle Washbourne was pretty muddy on the day I walked it (see photos - unfortunately rotated when uploaded). It was raining, and had been the previous day or two, but it did look like it might be prone to mud and surface water flooding, as well as being used for moving cattle up the hill from the farm buildings. I might walk it another day in drier weather to see if a regular issue.
Up on the ridge from Beer Leigh cross towards Bow was a fantastic old lane and would have great views I’m sure! The surface is good and looked to have been recently improved near Yetson.
(If the Middle Washbourne section is too muddy an alternative would be to continue on the lane towards Lower Washbourne and take the public footpath through Granary Farm, which follows good, hard farm tracks to rejoin the ridge road - I detoured here to check. Field gates and one pedestrian gate but no stiles.)
Good pub at Bow for a refreshment stop then quiet country lanes to Ashprington (another pub), where it picks up the Totnes-Ashprington foot and cycle (NCN) path through the Sharpham Estate. Well-maintained, accessible and very scenic route with lovely views (rain clearing by then!) over the Dart valley.
Very enjoyable. Torn between 4 and 5 stars but went with 4 because of the sticky section (4.5 if that was an option!).

Only one star for now: sadly this route is currently impassable due to road maintenance (see pix). When passable it's going to be a fantastic walk, albeit not accessible: you'd need to be both able bodied and physically fit. I might come back later in the year and give it a proper review. But an alternative route form Halwell to Totnes is probably also needed.
