Help connect Plymstock
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Plymstock’s Slow Ways.

Don't try to walk this route - the section where it crosses the A38 is simply not made for walkers and would be dangerous....

A good varied route, much along footpaths but also uses mostly quiet country lanes. On the day I walked it in late October I found the path across the field to the north of Brixton at the minor road SX 55093 52495 down to the village clear but muddy. This takes you diagonally across a ploughed, seeded and very muddy field. There was also a footpath closure north of Yealmpton at SX 57133 52523 into the village at SX 57706 51874....

At Montbatten point the path was closed from the ferry terminal in front of Mount Batten Hotel. If walking the opposite way from St Johns Road stay on Lawrence Road until you get to the ferry terminal - until the path re-opens!...

Sure, you could just walk the south west coast path all the way, but it would take considerably longer and you would miss some beautiful inland South Hams countryside, with its rolling green hills and pretty villages (and pubs). Firstly, it is a long one - I’d say more like 26-27 miles than 23 as the plotted route smooths out quite a few bends. I made it to the River Yealm ferry, leaving the old village of Plymstock and following mostly field paths through Wembury, to join the south west coast path and ferry (cash only) to Noss Mayo. From Noss Mayo it heads inland, following quiet lanes, before rejoining the coast path, which it follows all the way to the Erme. Again, the slow way heads inland following footpaths and some quiet lanes. The plotted route is not very accurate in places - bends smoothed out (some nodes missed) - but for the most part it is obvious from the underlying OS mapping what is intended. In Thurlestone head up the main village road, past the shop, then turn down Court Park Road (also footpath) to pick up the path through fields at Court Park to South Milton. Near South Huish Farm there are a couple of possible choices as the plotted route is not obvious. Both are probably fine but as the route generally heads east that’s what I did, following the footpath through a field (cattle grazing) past Court Barton to meet a minor road. Continue along the road to Malborough, after which the plotted route is easy to follow on footpaths and quiet lanes into Salcombe....

This makes it a little less accesible than plyply two - walkers only I think. Overall, a great alternative to plyply two (which should probably be the canonical route)....

The route takes a direct route from Royal Parade down to The Barbican, and then across the Sutton Harbour pedestrian footbridge....

The route begins at the guild hall on Royal Parade , in the city centre. The current route diverts you through the pedestrianised city centre through the shops which is unnecessary, I would advise just walking up Royal Parade instead which would shave off 10 minutes....

A straight forward route which starts by unnecessarily taking you through a bit of the pedestrianised shopping area before doubling back and leading you through the picturesque Barbican, briefly onto the coastal path and through industrial Cattedown. You walk along busy main road from there until reaching the centre of Plymstock. All of which is well paved....

I travelled this route on foot and it was mostly flat and simple to traverse. The route passes through the Barbican, which has toilet facilities, bars and plenty of takeaways....
