Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

19 Jan 2023I really enjoyed walking this route and would 100% walk it again. I actually walked it back in April 2022.
There's a fair amount of walking on lanes, so you need to be comfortable with that. We saw very few cars.
The right of way at Earlscombe Farm (between Ivybridge and Ugborough) is a few metres east of the farm buildings, which is slightly different to the route and OS Map, but not so different you can't find your way.
I'm adding a slightly different version (Ivytot Two) which makes use of a friend's local knowledge. It uses some slightly quieter lanes and is more direct in places, but it very similar.
I loved walking down the hill into Totnes.
Otherwise, I've nothing to add to Helen C's fine review.

20 Sep 2022 (edited 21 Sep 2022)A great slow way route through beautiful countryside & villages from the gateway to the moor to Totnes.
It is not accessible for wheels, with steps, numerous gates & stiles (including a couple of ladder stiles) & some quite steep gradients. However, it’s difficult to see how could be improved given the local landscape & topography without being all on road.
It follows footpaths, bridleways, unmetalled roads & quiet, leafy, country lanes, with pavement sections in towns & villages. There is one slightly tricky road crossing of the B3196 near Kittaford Cross but no walking along any busy roads.
Ivybridge has good transport links. The train station is a little way out of town but an easy walk in along foot way/cycleway.
The slow way starts on urban sealed bridleway & footways. It then follows quiet lanes & footpaths to Ugborough. At Earlscombe Farm a footpath which has been recently diverted so follow the waymarked route, not the gpx file (photo 3).
Refreshment opportunity at pub in Ugborough.
The footpath crossing of the B3196 is a little tricky with steps down the bank to the road so listen for traffic before committing. The continuation is just across the road & has a good refuge before going over a stile.
Talking of stiles, the next one is a stone step stile in a wall with ropes to help climb up & down (photo 6)!
The route continues along footpaths & very quiet country lanes through the pretty villages of North Huish & Diptford. Past Beenleigh footpath passes through fields which were being grazed by cattle at time - young steers in one then milking cows. The steers looked a little intimidating, but they wandered off into an adjacent field as I passed through & the cows took no notice of me.
The route then follows a combination of quiet lanes & unmetalled roads to Harberton (which has a pub also) & then on to Totnes. These ways feel very ancient & give a great sense of history.
Plenty of transport & refreshment options in Totnes.
A good day’s walk & very enjoyable.
