Help connect Crediton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Crediton’s Slow Ways.

I walked this route yesterday. It's a very hilly route and you can expect lots of great views across mid-Devon and across to Dartmoor....
pilea
It's by far the hilliest of the three routes - it's also got the best views and the least busy roads....

Obviously, whether you get problems with cows in a particular field depends on whether there are cows in it at that time, and what sort of mood they are in. But I think it's better to skirt round the field using the road anyway, given that it's not a particularly busy road. If you were walking from Lapford to Crediton, it might be a nice place to stop for a drink to celebrate the fact that you are almost at the end (we were going the other way and had another ten miles to walk, so passed up on that)....
QuercusXHispanica
After Newton St Cyres train station the footpath that comes off Lake Lane was overgrown and I was forced to push through the edge of a crop field....
DarkDreams
Almost exclusively off roads, it’s peaceful and good walking. From Black Dog to Witheridge it’s also largely off road and uses old bridleways...
Richard Wetenhall
After you cross the bridge, you walk back north-west and then turn north to walk up to Cheriton Bishop on lanes....

Just one small issue is a small section of route below Castle Drogo is not really there anymore and has been fenced off. There is an easy diversion by just continuing on the path you are already on, although it does add a few hundred metres to the route (see picture attached)....
Charles Hedley
This is really a lovely route between Chagford and Crediton, the highlight being the long stretch along the river Teign....
Charles Hedley
In that the section between Exeter and Newton St Cyres is, once over Millers crossing, entirely on the west side of the Exe. Care is needed on the unpaved road between the village and the train station at Newton St Cyres....
Tim Ryan
Very much a walk of two halves with the section from Moretonhampstead to Cheriton Bishop largely on footpaths and the section from Cheriton Bishop to Crediton largely on quiet country lanes....

Charles Hedley added Morcre two, a new walk from Moretonhampstead to Crediton
Walk this routeI walked the route in mid November after a couple of weeks rain so I was expecting mud, and I got it. The plotted route running east from Monkswylde takes you down a private drive to Middlecott Cottage. It joins the footpath though and is not obvious as a private route if walking from the east. East of Morchard Bishop, there was electric fence across a cross field footpath....

- Problem 2: the route uses the main road between Cheriton Bishop and the A30 crossing....
Charles Hedley
It is a good alternative for when the Exe Valley Way path between Tiverton and Bickleigh is in flood....
Tim Ryan
The first half from Chagford, after a short section on pavement & quiet country lanes, follows the River Teign through the stunning gorge below Castle Drogo & through Fingle Woods. From Clifford Bridge the route follows quiet country lanes with very little traffic. Continuing from Cheriton Bishop the route crosses a bridge over the A30 then follows a bridleway along a lane then though fields. From then on the route follows very quiet country lanes through mid Devon countryside....

I walked this route in the Crediton - North Tawton direction at the beginning of October on a lovely sunny day....
Charles Hedley
Lots of great view in all directions especially on the Two Moors Way section between Witheridge and Black Dog....
Charles Hedley
The short section on the main road is the only issue with this route in my opinion....
Charles Hedley
Overall a lovely walk with lovely views and even includes wallabies! The previous comments about the crossing of the A377 are accurate. This was an unpleasant 1 min of walking when I was there at rush hour....
Charles Hedley
The Beer Engine in Newton St Cyres is a great option for a stop and the path along the Creedy a nice easy way to restart afterwards....
Emily Howells
better than Creexe One which involves some road walking that I'd prefer to avoid. I'm not sure if there is currently a better way to walk between these places....
pilea
The route starts with picturesque Shobrooke Park before heading across a mix of lanes and fields to Raddon Hill. After Raddon Hill the route winds down into Thorverton using more lanes and across pretty green fields. The route takes you past Exe Valley Farm shop - good breakfasts, lunches and coffees - before crossing the busy Exeter-Tiverton road and winding through quiet lanes into Silverton....
Sophie Skinner
Plenty of possible pub stops along the route in Shoebrook, Thorverton and Silverton....

QuercusXHispanica added Chagcre three, a new walk from Chagford to Crediton
Walk this routeIn my opinion this is a great route with fantastic views of the Devon countryside and Dartmoor throughout. As said in the previous review, it is a fairly muddy route in the winter/early spring but the vast majority of this was not a problem with a good pair of walking boots....
Charles Hedley
A lovely route through the beautiful mid Devon countryside with wonderful views, including both Exmoor and Dartmoor. It starts in open fields and then mostly follows tracks and very quiet lanes. It is easy to follow (the first section is part of the Two Moors Way) but is quite hilly and can be very muddy so would be a real challenge on wheels....
Susanna Bennett
Good places to refresh in Sandford and Morchard Bishop with shops and pubs in both....
Tim Ryan
danravenellison added Lapcre two, a new walk from Lapford to Crediton
Walk this routeI'm going to upload Lapcre Two as an alternative which is true to this route's spirit, but corrects those problems and updates right of way issue too....
danravenellison
This route is complex. Not because it's hard to navigate... but because on one hand it's a beautiful and enjoyable hike... but on the other, it was very wet and muddy when I walked it.. If it wasn't for being so wet and muddy it would be a superb Slow Way and be worth more stars. I'd love this to be a 4 star route.... but it was just SO muddy in places... and in a few places there was no choice but to walk through water.....
danravenellison
For people who are in Exeter I recommend catching a train or bus to Crediton and walking home....
danravenellison
The route is pleasant and mostly on footpaths and minor Devon roads unpaved, but generally quiet....
Tim Ryan
The route starts following pavements through Crediton before following a long stretch of footpaths and road walking alternating. None of the road walking segments were bad when I walked on a Sunday morning - fairly short and very quiet....
mtormey
An option at Black Dog is to avoid walking along the road (unless going to the pub) and take the paths on the more direct line....
Tim Ryan
Care needed on a very short section of busy road on the A377 near Half Moon Village, as the route crosses the road....
Tim Ryan
Glorious countryside and quite possibly the best way to get between Tiverton and Crediton. Misses out on a 5th star only because of a short section of undesirable road walking....
danravenellison
Lovely route - but needs amending due to an access issue at Shobrooke Park....
Tim Ryan
One short section along the A3072 Bickleigh to Crediton Road has no pavement and little verge. It is however on a straight and relatively short section of road connecting 2 footpaths....
Tim Ryan
The Beer Engine brewery and pub is half way along the route and was a welcome pit-stop during our hot walk. The route does not get 5 stars from me because, as other reviewers have noted, there's a couple of bits of road walking that are not ideal....
danravenellison
The only downside are two unsafe bits: along the A377 near Half Moon Village, and crossing the bridge between Exeter and Cowley, where there is no footpath and high traffic....
aro
I just wanted to flag that there's one very small section of this route that is on the A377, just before Half Moon Village (coming from Crediton towards Exeter). Although it's a very short part of the walk, the road is so busy and narrow and this part has poor visibility for crossing - it feels very unsafe, especially with children. Unfortunately there is no obvious alternative - it'd be great to solve this problem as this was part of a lovely circular walk we enjoyed during lockdown when there was much less traffic!...
