Help connect Chagford
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Chagford’s Slow Ways.

Between South Zeal and North Tawton is on quiet minor roads for the most part. at Throwleigh I would recommend not taking the Two Moors Way route which goes through the churchyard, it is quite muddy at the river crossing and I think is unnecessary the short road section north of Throwleigh is very quiet and more direct....

It does cross open moorland between Warren Cross and Yardworthy, and although this section is mostly along the Two Moors Way, it is not signed and could be difficult in poor visibility. There are refreshment opportunities at The Warren Inn, a pub and cafe at Postbridge, pub at Two Bridges....

Tim Ryan added Okecha two, a new walk from Okehampton to Chagford
Walk this routeThese stones can be very slippery when wet and not everybody would be totally confident making this crossing. There are stiles, steps and stepping zones on the route....

I attempted to walk this on 25 Nov 2023 heading from Chagford to Okehampton but the stepping stones crossing of the river Teign 1.5 miles from Chagford was impassable. I rejoined the Okecha route at Throwleigh and followed it to the edge of Okehampton where I cut through a nicer way into the town via Ball Hill woods....

Before exiting Dartmoor you stop at a lovely village called South Zeal which i was fortunate enough to arrive as they had just started their yearly festival. Stayed for a few days and enjoyed the folksy music and people. From there it's mostly country roads up to North Tawton but it can't be helped with the lack of public footpaths....

From there it's fairly simple although in the later forests, around Fernworthy, there's a lot of deforestation so all the maps are a bit inaccurate in the size of the forests. But once you make it to Chagford it's a beautiful little town with a great camping shop for getting any new supplies....

The train station is up the hill from the town centre so if coming by train and you have no particular need to go into the town, you could follow a bridleway signed ‘tramlines bridleway’, which leads west-east from station road immediately adjacent to the station entrance, and join the slow way just past Ball Hill viaduct. The route soon heads off-road again following a bridleway to Sticklepath. After Sticklepath the slow way picks up the Dartmoor Way promoted route, which it then largely follows to Chagford, with just a slight deviation just past South Zeal (South Zeal has pubs and shops and wcs), following quiet lanes and footpaths to Throwleigh, passing through a secret meadow. The route finishes on quiet lanes again entering Chagford, a very nice little town with a good choice of independent shops, pubs and cafés....

Second, the path from Postbridge to Chagford via the reservoir is poorly marked on the slow ways maps. Just after this the Slow Ways path goes straight on, but really the better path is to the right and into the forest above the reservoir....

After you cross the bridge, you walk back north-west and then turn north to walk up to Cheriton Bishop on lanes....

Just one small issue is a small section of route below Castle Drogo is not really there anymore and has been fenced off. There is an easy diversion by just continuing on the path you are already on, although it does add a few hundred metres to the route (see picture attached)....

This is really a lovely route between Chagford and Crediton, the highlight being the long stretch along the river Teign....

The first half from Chagford, after a short section on pavement & quiet country lanes, follows the River Teign through the stunning gorge below Castle Drogo & through Fingle Woods. From Clifford Bridge the route follows quiet country lanes with very little traffic. Continuing from Cheriton Bishop the route crosses a bridge over the A30 then follows a bridleway along a lane then though fields. From then on the route follows very quiet country lanes through mid Devon countryside....

Would be 5* but for an essential 400 metres along the unpaved B3212 between Bughead cross and Thorns Cross....
Tim Ryan
I really wanted to help this route on its way to a snail but unfortunately I feel the section along the B3212 is just too dangerous for a published walkers' route. But don't get me wrong, much of this route is really beautiful using some lovely footpaths....

Public transport links to Chagford are limited but there are more buses to/from M’hampstead, including a bus to/from Chagford twice a day. It also follows part of the Dartmoor Way at the M’hampstead end. A legal issue rather than access issue as such - there was a path available to go around the fenced off areas - but the official path follows a ridge line & would offer better views....
