Help connect Silverton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Silverton’s Slow Ways.

At the Culompton end, it is a more direct route with fewer ascent but you miss some extra views over the town and of Hillersdon House....

A nice walk, mostly along quiet country lanes and some unsurfaced tracks with a few good ascents....

The climb out of Silverton is fairly steep but this is along a beautiful old Devon track which more than compensates. You are rewarded with big views on the way down to Cullompton...
Nick Silver
I could not find the crossing shown but was able to cross the bridge just to the north after walking through a farm yard....

Walked from Silverton to Cullompton as part of a circle starting and finsihing in Ottery St Mary. Some tracks and footpaths but largely lanes, which were very lightly used the day I walked. Very long hill up is rewarded by a rather wonderful view of East Devon....

There is also an issue at Budlake where the mapping is not quite right - the permissive pass runs along the M5 for a while and over the farm bridge - the crossing indicated on the route does not exist....

Walk this routeA pleasant route that does miss out on the usually excellent walk along the banks of the Exe. But a good option after heavy rain. The route also misses out on the pub and cafe at Bickleigh....

Need to cross the main line railway at an unmanned crossing but on a long straight stretch of track...

There's a level crossing a mile south of Silverton which demands some care and attention, as it's an uncontrolled crossing straight across the tracks used by HST trains....

The southern section between Silverton & Bickleigh is generally on small roads/lanes, although some of them are too small for vehicles, so at least quiet and generally traffic-free. It also includes a noticeable climb of a hill north of Silverton, which does provide some pleasant views south towards the coast. The northern half of the route between Bickleigh and Tiverton is mostly on decent footpaths beside the River Exe....
Bob G
The only bit which is less well signposted is the entrance to the footpath after Bickleigh Mill (good food, acceptable coffee)....

As the path meets the road by Stoke Post is the first small section of the road which feels a bit less safe - 30mph is not religiously adhered to. This looks on the map as if you start from the cross roads, but you need to follow the road for a few extra metres past the house Westings and then take the signposted path (see picture 4)....

This was a very enjoyable route, which I found quite easy to walk - no difficult assents, obstacles or uneven ground. The route takes you through gorgeous and leafy sections of the Devon countryside, and the river Exe is frequent company. Around the Woodrow barton area the route directed the walker along a public byway, but as the photo blow shows there were signs explicitly stating 'no throughway' and 'cows only'. If somebody can explain how I perhaps misread the signs/directions, then the route should be kept at 4 stars, if not, it perhaps should receive a lower rating?...

A very pleasant route following quiet country lanes and byways for the most part. No real problems found, but some steep climbs are involved....

The route starts with picturesque Shobrooke Park before heading across a mix of lanes and fields to Raddon Hill. After Raddon Hill the route winds down into Thorverton using more lanes and across pretty green fields. The route takes you past Exe Valley Farm shop - good breakfasts, lunches and coffees - before crossing the busy Exeter-Tiverton road and winding through quiet lanes into Silverton....

Most of this route is beautiful and enjoyable, but unfortunately it depends on extended walking on the A396. This is a busy road with no paths alongside it for extended sections. I am uploading an alternative route that I walked and some other suggestions....

However as it stands there is a section which goes along a private road through "Lower Roach" from SS 96117 03638 to SS 96293 04538. There is however a delightful path from SS 96101 04242 which by-passes the private road and is included in TIVSIL two....
