Latest Updates
This route is OK but the footpaths can be quite hard to follow as they aren't that clearly marked. A couple to the East of Dunsford require faith and to go along the side of fields rather than follow the marked ways. Not recommended after heavy rain or when visibility is bad because some of the paths near Longdown turn into very muddy rivers....
Slow Ways Darren
This is generally a beautiful route, avoiding the main road where possible....

From North Bovey it follows quiet country lanes and a lovely holloway. Choice of pubs and cafés at Widecombe (I can recommend the Rugglestone south of the village centre en route to Ashburton - it also has a camping field)....

For info, from the OS map it looks like there is access westwards from the footpath at Northwood to join an unmetalled road beside the river Teign (marked with green dots)....

There is a slightly easier permissive route signed which adds a switchback then follows a marginally less steep path at the edge of the wood, parallel to the official route which is available but directly up through the wood. The route continues on quiet lanes with a short hop across the B3344 at Crocombe Bridge then back on quiet roads then footpath. The slow way therefore continues southeast on a footpath to Chudleighwoods Farm then joins an unmetalled road heading back towards the river along a lovely holloway, before following a public footpath through woodland. There appears to be an unofficial path along the bottom of the wood but the slow way follows the marked public footpath....

Walk this routeVery much a walk of two halves with the section from Moretonhampstead to Cheriton Bishop largely on footpaths and the section from Cheriton Bishop to Crediton largely on quiet country lanes....

Charles Hedley added Morcre two, a new walk from Moretonhampstead to Crediton
Walk this route- Problem 2: the route uses the main road between Cheriton Bishop and the A30 crossing....
Charles Hedley
Would be 5* but for an essential 400 metres along the unpaved B3212 between Bughead cross and Thorns Cross....
Tim Ryan
When I walked it, these roads were very quiet, and the walking was always safe and pleasant....
Tim Ryan
I really wanted to help this route on its way to a snail but unfortunately I feel the section along the B3212 is just too dangerous for a published walkers' route. But don't get me wrong, much of this route is really beautiful using some lovely footpaths....
Bostal Boy
Public transport links to Chagford are limited but there are more buses to/from M’hampstead, including a bus to/from Chagford twice a day. It also follows part of the Dartmoor Way at the M’hampstead end. A legal issue rather than access issue as such - there was a path available to go around the fenced off areas - but the official path follows a ridge line & would offer better views....

danravenellison added Morexe four, a new walk from Moretonhampstead to Exeter
Walk this routeI've shared Morexe Four as a strong alternative that's great to walk, but has a pinch point on the B3212 under the A30 that some people will not feel comfortable walking....
danravenellison
The footpath is overgrown here and it's necessary to walk down the road for 50 metres or so. The council should really cut back the vegetation and make this crossing safe as there is no other way (that I can see) to walk between Firs Park and Pocombe Hill or Exeter....
danravenellison
The start and finish of the route have lots of amenities including shops, places to eat, places to stay and are on bus routes....

Tim Ryan added Morexe three, a new walk from Moretonhampstead to Exeter
Walk this routeThis is an excellent route and really should be getting 5 stars....
Tim Ryan
surrounded by beautiful moorland, with forest walking, disused mining railway trail and some road between Princetown and Two Bridges....
Tim Ryan
Beautiful ride along the Wray Valley Trail either end, with a short road section on very quiet lanes in the middle. Lovely all year round, but particularly in spring....
chloebee
It's quite a climb from there up on to the moor at Heatree, but very quiet - with options to go on other lanes if you want....
chloebee
You need to climb/descend a hill to join/leave the path at Moretonhampstead. The middle section through Lustleigh is hilly is on the public highway (no pavement)....
