Help connect Lapford
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Lapford’s Slow Ways.

We'd had some rain in the week, but not for a couple of days, so I expect that's a common problem....

This is a good, direct and easy to follow route that's almost entirely on solid lanes....

I walked this route yesterday. It's a very hilly route and you can expect lots of great views across mid-Devon and across to Dartmoor....

Considering the amount of rain over the last few days before the walk, the mud was more than manageable and wellies were not necessary at all....
Jane Gough
I walked from Lapford to North Tawton, and almost all of it is along quiet lanes, which at the tops of the hills have fantastic views....
Helen Gough
There is no way across the railway where the route suggests, so I have uploaded NorLap3 which uses the road bridge to cross the railway and is more direct...

Helen Gough added Norlap three, a new walk from North Tawton to Lapford
Walk this routeObviously, whether you get problems with cows in a particular field depends on whether there are cows in it at that time, and what sort of mood they are in. But I think it's better to skirt round the field using the road anyway, given that it's not a particularly busy road. If you were walking from Lapford to Crediton, it might be a nice place to stop for a drink to celebrate the fact that you are almost at the end (we were going the other way and had another ten miles to walk, so passed up on that)....

As you climb out of Lapford make sure you look back as the views from there are outstanding, with Dartmoor in the far distance....
Helen Gough
A lovely walk with amazing views. Walked on a very hot day but even on the lanes there was plenty of shade. Lovely walk through woods and although some climbing needed nothing too bad....
Jane Gough
A lovely local inn to be found at the end of the walk to partake of some much appreciated liquid refreshment....

I walked the route in mid November after a couple of weeks rain so I was expecting mud, and I got it. The plotted route running east from Monkswylde takes you down a private drive to Middlecott Cottage. It joins the footpath though and is not obvious as a private route if walking from the east. East of Morchard Bishop, there was electric fence across a cross field footpath....

Walk this routeHowever, the other end of the closed path was accessible, with no signage, so if walking from Chulmleigh and following a map you would walk the path, only to get stuck and have to retrace your steps. I have uploaded ChuLap 3 which avoids this problem...
Helen Gough
You are quickly on to quite a long stretch of lane walking, but these are quiet and the hedgerows don't completely block out the countryside....
Helen Gough
Some pretty impressive views which make some of the climbing worth it! Done during Autumn, the colours surrounding you make you stop and stare at several points in awe. Some pretty mucky bits in places, but overall very enjoyable....
Carlyn Gough
A muddy section of a not well defined path near the river crossing at Chawleigh Barton Woods apart the route was easy to follow....
Tim Ryan
In my opinion this is a great route with fantastic views of the Devon countryside and Dartmoor throughout. As said in the previous review, it is a fairly muddy route in the winter/early spring but the vast majority of this was not a problem with a good pair of walking boots....
Charles Hedley
Good places to refresh in Sandford and Morchard Bishop with shops and pubs in both....
Tim Ryan
But these roads are very quiet and make for an enjoyable walk. The walk along the river is very pleasant, and the field crossings above Lapford are a delight....

Walk this routeas long as you don't mind lots of walking down lanes and (after its been wet) some muddy sections. If you don't like walking down Devon lanes with occasional tractors and cars, you might not enjoy this route....

danravenellison added Lapcre two, a new walk from Lapford to Crediton
Walk this routeI'm going to upload Lapcre Two as an alternative which is true to this route's spirit, but corrects those problems and updates right of way issue too....
danravenellison
This route is complex. Not because it's hard to navigate... but because on one hand it's a beautiful and enjoyable hike... but on the other, it was very wet and muddy when I walked it.. If it wasn't for being so wet and muddy it would be a superb Slow Way and be worth more stars. I'd love this to be a 4 star route.... but it was just SO muddy in places... and in a few places there was no choice but to walk through water.....
