Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

An enjoyable trail overall from Crediton to Witheridge with quite a bit of climbing but some interesting pieces.

The walk out through Sandford and on is a bit tedious with most of it on or beside roads. However, once that’s behind you, you’re on to old bridleways and even ancient roads. At one stage a farmer informed us we were on the old roman road from Exeter to Barnstaple!

This second piece up to Black Dog was very good. Almost exclusively off roads, it’s peaceful and good walking. The Slow Maps app is pretty accurate through here too.

We are sad to report the old Black Dog pub itself is closed…

From Black Dog to Witheridge it’s also largely off road and uses old bridleways. You do need to be careful in your orienteering as it’s easy to drift from the path on this section.

I walked this route in the Witheridge-Crediton direction. Overall a really lovely but hilly route. Lots of great view in all directions especially on the Two Moors Way section between Witheridge and Black Dog. I would highly recommend this route.
I got a combination of the Number 5 and Number 155 buses via Exeter to get back to my start point.

A lovely route through the beautiful mid Devon countryside with wonderful views, including both Exmoor and Dartmoor. It starts in open fields and then mostly follows tracks and very quiet lanes. It is easy to follow (the first section is part of the Two Moors Way) but is quite hilly and can be very muddy so would be a real challenge on wheels.

An excellent rural and hilly route. Lovely views, very quiet. There are 2 pubs in Sandford and one in Black Dog, although all currently have restricted opening times during the week. An option at Black Dog is to avoid walking along the road (unless going to the pub) and take the paths on the more direct line.
