Description

This route is slightly longer than Chagcre one, but it makes more use of the footpath along the Teign, which is very nice, and there is less road walking. It also allows for a refreshment stop at the Fingle Bridge Inn, which is also very nice.

Like the original route, it can potentially be split into two shorter routes by breaking at Cheriton Bishop which is on the 173 bus route that runs from Moretonhampstead, through Chagford and Cheriton Bishop, to Exeter

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Lovely first half along the Teign then up to Cheriton Bishop. We managed to find a better route up from Clifford Bridge to Cheriton Bishop. After you cross the bridge, you walk back north-west and then turn north to walk up to Cheriton Bishop on lanes. Half way up that road going northwest, we found a by-way on the right that leads right into CB but is either off roads or only quiet lanes.

Second half rather monotonous road walking on country lanes. Tired when finished as we had to walk on to Sandford. A 20 mile day overall and hard on the feet in the second half.

The route itself is shown well on the Slow Ways map and we didn’t find any obvious errors, so happy to Verify this trail.

This is really a lovely route between Chagford and Crediton, the highlight being the long stretch along the river Teign.
This route does have quite a lot of lane walking but they are very quiet and the rolling hills offer lots of great views.
I highly recommend this route.

There is only 1 bus servide (173) that goes to Chagford from Exeter. There are only about 5 buses a day so if you are finishing in Chagford it's best to check the times so as not to miss the last one. There are plenty of transport options to Exeter from Crediton.

A very enjoyable walk. It’s not suitable for wheeled users as there are steps, steep gradients & uneven ground.

I started in Chagford, walking west to east, as the public transport links worked better for me that way. Chagford has limited bus connections but there is a service from Exeter. Crediton is well-served by bus & train.

It is very much a route of two halves. The first half from Chagford, after a short section on pavement & quiet country lanes, follows the River Teign through the stunning gorge below Castle Drogo & through Fingle Woods. When not enveloped in low cloud you will get a glimpse of the castle. The gorge is beautiful, with lots of wildlife to see. There is a steep stepped section at one point, & the path can be rocky & uneven but is largely flat & wasn’t muddy, even after recent rain. There is a refreshment opportunity at Fingle Bridge Inn (& public toilets in the NT car park after you’ve crossed the bridge).

From Clifford Bridge the route follows quiet country lanes with very little traffic. Quite a climb up out of the valley. There is a shop in Cheriton Bishop & a cafe at Woodside guest house near the A30 junction. There’s also a regular bus service if you needed to split the route here.

Continuing from Cheriton Bishop the route crosses a bridge over the A30 then follows a bridleway along a lane then though fields. It was a little muddy.

From then on the route follows very quiet country lanes through mid Devon countryside. Walking on tarmac felt a bit monotonous after a while but there aren’t many off-road paths. If there were, any in this part of Devon would be pretty sticky with mud after rain so quiet lanes are probably for the best. The route offers fine far-reaching views towards East Devon. It’s an area not often visited & very peaceful. Coming into Crediton the route follows some footpaths & pavement. Crediton has lots of refreshment opportunities, shops & public transport.
