Help connect Renfrew

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Renfrew’s Slow Ways.

When you get to the retail park with b and q take care when you cross the road as there is no pavement on the other side of the road so you need to cross over the grass to allow you to continue on your walk. Lots of interesting buildings to look at along the way especially as you get to Renfrew town hall....

Even though it was right next to the motorway, it was screened by trees which kept the noise and pollution down a bit. The off-road path continued with a bridge over the motorway, then over the railway, eventually bringing me out to the cemetery and crematorium, at about half way through the route. A friend who lives close by joined me for the second half of the route and we soon started through Bellahouston Park. After crossing the railway and the M77, we proceeded along a surprisingly pleasant bit of cycle track right next to the motorway but screened by trees with a reasonable viewpoint at the end....

Leaving Paisley (the plot is vague on leaving the station but there are one or two routes on the ground) the first 40% of the route was along a busy road section with retail parks and lots of traffic, some housing and a college. (Rather than walk along the main road, A741, I would have preferred to walk along Brown Street, S & N, and the entered Robertson Park a bit further west. Also, a little earlier, I would have walked straight through Moorpark Square, past the playground. These are fairly small alterations though.)....

There is a section along the busy Dumbarton Road (I chose to follow the cycle path which runs parallel to the road but about 100 metres to the north). The route then turns off Dumbarton Road onto Kingsway and then becomes Anniesland Road. Then there is only a short walk along Dorchester Avenue, a turn into Clevedon Road and the route arrives at its end point – Kelvindale Train Station....

It was easy to navigate, the plotting even indicates which side of the road to walk on, although I disobeyed at one point because I needed a break from the strong sun! The only bad point was a nasty road crossing at OS Grid Ref: NS 54777 66564 close to the midpoint of the walk, between the roundabout and the harbour road (South Street)....

Anyway, this route is certainly quite good and a nice direct route between these two points. It is a very interesting route. I just wasn’t entirely blown away by it.. The route out of Glasgow is fine and direct, but not the most thrilling city centre streets. The footbridge over the motorway is really cool, but it’s still a footbridge over the motorway.. At the end of Partick, there’s a pretty desolate stretch along an industrial road which my female companions told me they wouldn’t feel quite thrilled about walking alone. It is short, and the vast majority of the rest of the route is along a lovely disused railway-turned greenway. It’s quite pleasant.....

This road leads directly to the Clyde via a road crossing over the busy King’s Inch Road and the path through Clyde View Park. Once out of the park, the route turns right to follow the walkway adjacent to the Clyde. However it is easy enough to go around the cemetery if preferred by taking Berryknowes Road then Paisley Road West. The route emerges from the cemetery at “Halfway” and follows Paisley Road West for a few hundred metres before entering Bellahouston Park. It then takes a rather circuitous route (presumably following the core path) before leaving the park at Dumbreck Road....

The railway section eventually drops down to street level at Smith Street and continues straight ahead, beside the busy South Street. The Rengla 2 route heads off near here to follow Dumbarton Road through Partick but Rengla 1 continues straight ahead, past waterfront flats on the right until reaching the footbridge over the Clydeside Expressway to the Transport Museum. The important Partick Travel Hub is passed on the left and the route eventually joins Dumbarton Road (and Rengla2) at Partick Cross (the bottom of Byres Road)....

The route starts at Glasgow Central Station and heads west along Waterloo Street. Here, the route heads under the Clydeside Expressway and merges once more with Rengla 1 at South Street / Castlebank Street. The pace then picks up as the route shifts onto a walking/cycling track and the city starts to be left behind (For anyone interested, this track leads all the way to Loch Lomond and beyond – a fantastic day out)....

The route out of Paisley begins along the busy Renfrew Road but quickly switches to the adjacent minor road with a welcome reduction in traffic noise. Once the route crosses the M8, it heads into housing estates and does not emerge back onto the main road until near the centre of Renfrew....

The route now zig-zags through an extensive residential area, eventually joining and crossing the busy Paisley Road West at the handy shopping area of Cardonald. From this point on, the route follows a cycle path down to and along the White Cart Water, into Pollok Park and arriving at the impressive Pollok House. At Pollok House, the route heads south across an ornate bridge and strikes off along the northern edge of the Pollok Golf Course....

Unfortunately the route passes through a an industrial fuel depot with no public access, but with a diversion it's a perfectly reasonable route. Do be aware of the ferry schedule - check in advance to be certain the ferry will be running. The crossing itself is very quick....

At Yoker on the north bank the route picks up a combined cycle/foot path which runs most of the way to Partick. This is where the routing falls down imo, this part is not very pleasant, and in addition it then almost completely bypasses the interesting and lively high street at Partick (Dumbarton Road)....

Walk this route

I was walking Rengla one from Renfrew to Glasgow, and got a bit fed up with the road slog along South Street; I could see the cafes and shops on Dumbarton Road through the A814 underpass and thought 'why not? Before long the route turns onto a long off road cycle/pedestrian path that takes you about 4km directly towards Glasgow. I am starting to think that no walk into central Glasgow is complete without at least one elaborate motorway crossing point, this time it is the Anderston Bridge across the M8. The Anderston Bridge was for many years infamous as the 'bridge that goes nowhere', because when the M8 was built the bridge was started but not finished, leaving the community in Anderston cut off from central Glasgow by the motorway. Eventually campaigns to complete the bridge succeeded, and it now provides an efficient walking and cycling route into central Glasgow from the west....

Review of SlowWays Route Clyren (Clydebank to Renfrew). The route turns right to follow the edge of the Clyde and arrive at the Yoker-Renfrew ferry slipway. The route from the ferry slipway to the town centre follows a footpath along the bed of an old railway line before turning east along Fulbar Street and aiming for the well-known landmark of the Renfrew Town Hall tower....
