Help connect Paisley

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Paisley’s Slow Ways.

When you get to the retail park with b and q take care when you cross the road as there is no pavement on the other side of the road so you need to cross over the grass to allow you to continue on your walk. Lots of interesting buildings to look at along the way especially as you get to Renfrew town hall....

Leaving Paisley (the plot is vague on leaving the station but there are one or two routes on the ground) the first 40% of the route was along a busy road section with retail parks and lots of traffic, some housing and a college. (Rather than walk along the main road, A741, I would have preferred to walk along Brown Street, S & N, and the entered Robertson Park a bit further west. Also, a little earlier, I would have walked straight through Moorpark Square, past the playground. These are fairly small alterations though.)....

The section along the A8 was very straight and felt very long, but also very safe with a wide pavement/cycle path, and also views towards the airport. The next long straight section was along a disused (I think!) road alongside the main runway of the airport....

I know this area well, and was a little disappointed to find that the route omits a number of potential short-cuts (e.g. Stoney Brae) and diversions through green spaces (e.g. Carlibar Park / Levern Walkway in Barrhead and Saucel Hill / White Cart Walkway in Paisley)....

Review of SlowWays Route Erspai1 (Erskine to Paisley). The route then continues out of Inchinnan along Greenock Road through farmland (watch out for displaying Lapwings and singing Yellowhammers in spring, Whooper Swans in winter) in the direction of the road bridge over the Black Cart. Once over the bridge, the route along what used to be Abbotsinch Road is currently (April 2021) blocked by major earthworks. Meanwhile, the short diversion leads the walker back to Abbotsinch Road a little further along the airport perimeter fence and then there is a long but straightforward stretch of road down into Paisley and the end of the route at Paisley Gilmour Street Station....

The route out of Paisley begins along the busy Renfrew Road but quickly switches to the adjacent minor road with a welcome reduction in traffic noise. Once the route crosses the M8, it heads into housing estates and does not emerge back onto the main road until near the centre of Renfrew....
