Help connect Barrhead
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Barrhead’s Slow Ways.

Once the route moves under the M77 it turns into quiet residential housing, which is much more pleasant and peaceful to walk through....

Once out of the town, there's a nice stretch along country lanes with long views of the surrounding countryside....

From there, the route uses a clearly marked footpath and bridge to rejoin another rural road, cresting the hill and dropping down into Uplawmoor, where there is a good pub....

As the other review has said, the portion past the housing is much more pleasant and all in all it is a good route for joining the two nodes. There are plenty of options for refreshment at both ends of the walk, and they link well with other onward travel options....

I walked this route in September 2024, heading from Thornliebank to Barrhead. The first half runs along busy roads, although there is pavement the whole way so doesn't put walkers at risk. Once you pass under the M77, you turn into quiet residential housing and the route improves significantly....

I know this area well, and was a little disappointed to find that the route omits a number of potential short-cuts (e.g. Stoney Brae) and diversions through green spaces (e.g. Carlibar Park / Levern Walkway in Barrhead and Saucel Hill / White Cart Walkway in Paisley)....

Walk this routeHowever there is a short section of the route which presents a considerable access challenge and therefore the route will require to be redesigned. Just before a big, new housing estate, the route follows a path off to the right. Once these junctions have been left behind, the route heads away from the main road via a path which leads uphill and then down again into the Arden housing estate. There is evidence that alternative access to the embankment path was once possible via an adjacent, modern housing estate, but on the day I passed, the link had been completely boarded up....
