Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

18 Aug 2022Good route with a lovely section through Pollok Country Park.
Starting at Renfrew the route is urban with a mix of residential, retail park and light industrial.
It was a hot day and there was very little shade until I reached the country park.
I had tea and visited Pollok house, which is where the National Trust for Scotland was founded.
The road between Pollok Country Park and Thornliebank is quite busy, but there is good pavement.
The route passes Thornliebank station and finishes at some shops in central Thornliebank. As well as trains there is a good bus service to Glasgow.
This is a classic ‘urban edges’ route which sums up what Slow Ways is about - connecting places, finding interesting and surprising things to see on the way, and staying direct.
All walking on good paths.

16 Oct 2021This is quite a long route so I elected to walk it over a two day period in October 2021. The route starts at Renfrew Town Hall and zig-zags through some of the residential streets of the town until entering a supermarket car park. There is a gate at the south west corner of the car park which leads around the edge of school grounds until a footbridge appears up ahead. This bridge, which is accessible to cycles and wheelchairs, provides an easy crossing of the M8 motorway. On leaving the footbridge the route follows the edge of North Arkleston Farm (a very welcome patch of countryside within an otherwise very urban area). The road here is quite busy but the pavement is nice and wide. Even better, there are adjacent footpaths where the road crosses the railway line and again where it crosses the shoulder of Honeybog Hill (with good views ahead and behind). The route now zig-zags through an extensive residential area, eventually joining and crossing the busy Paisley Road West at the handy shopping area of Cardonald. From this point on, the route follows a cycle path down to and along the White Cart Water, into Pollok Park and arriving at the impressive Pollok House. This part of the route and the next short section are through one of the biggest green spaces in the city. At Pollok House, the route heads south across an ornate bridge and strikes off along the northern edge of the Pollok Golf Course. This stretch is a little lonely and some walkers may prefer to follow the more popular path along the north side of the river (i.e. without crossing the bridge) instead. Both routes emerge on Pollokshaws Road and turn right. The walk up to Thornliebank is then mostly along the busy Thornliebank Road with a slight diversion to take advantage of some green space in Greenbank Park. The route ends at the busy shopping area in the centre of Thornliebank. This route broadly meets the SlowWays criteria. It is accurate, accessible, off-road for much of its length and quite attractive in places. Safety might be an issue for some users, especially along the rather lonely stretch between Pollok House Bridge and Pollokshaws Bowling Club. If preferred, Pollok Avenue can be followed from Pollok House to the main east gate of the park.
