Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Review of SlowWays Route Renkel one (Renfrew to Kelvindale)
I walked this route on a sunny afternoon in June 2023. It is a relatively short and very simple route. Probably the highlight is the trip across the Clyde in the Renfrew-Yoker Ferry which is reached by walking the short distance from the town cross. The ferry is a joy and so simple – walk on board, pay the fare, take a seat, have just enough time to exchange pleasantries with the pilot or another passenger and then it’s time to get off again. Everyone should make this trip at least once in a lifetime, but hurry! When the new bridge being constructed nearby is finished, the ferry will almost certainly be withdrawn.
The remainder of the walk is quite dull in comparison. There is a section along the busy Dumbarton Road (I chose to follow the cycle path which runs parallel to the road but about 100 metres to the north). The route then turns off Dumbarton Road onto Kingsway and then becomes Anniesland Road. The going is easy here with wide pavements and few road junctions to negotiate. However, that changes at Anniesland Cross where a fair amount of patience is required to deal with the multiple pedestrian crossings needed to eventually reach the north side of Great Western Road. After passing under an interesting railway bridge, the traveller is confronted with three of the loveliest buildings in Glasgow, namely the former Ascot Cinema and the twin apartment blocks of Kelvin Court. A short section along a leafy path parallel to the road brings welcome relief from the noise of traffic. Then there is only a short walk along Dorchester Avenue, a turn into Clevedon Road and the route arrives at its end point – Kelvindale Train Station. A short, simple, straightforward and accurately plotted route. Not the most attractive, but there is plenty to interest the curious traveller along the way.
