The first path out of PSE by the church is actually a stream (Photo 1), but it was passable with boots with a bit of stone and log hopping. After Groes-faen, it was mostly fields, although there was one lovely short stretch through woodland (Photo 2). Photo 2 - A short woodland stretch between Groes-faen and Llantrisant...

The only section that wasn`t obvious was between Gaer Wood up to where the footpath emerges at Crossways, where a couple of direction markers were missing and it was so easy to just follow the Valeways markers. Photo 1 - The River Ely just outside Peterston-super-Ely...

The only issue I had with navigation was at Maes yr Haul Farm, just before the village of Pendoylan - the path is signposted from both ends on the lanes, but there was a tied gate in the fields. If you`re not happy to climb tied gates, there is a short detour (maybe a couple of hundred metres further) around the lanes....

Once away from the dual carriageway linking Talbot Green to the M4, it became a nice rural walk through lanes and fields. The only other wet area was after crossing the footbridge over the stream on the path leaving the road after the cemetery just outside Talbot Green, some strategically placed logs and stones, already in place, saved the day though....

This route took us from Cowbridge into Peterston, it started off on a pavement path under the railway and taking us up a short sharp hill onto a lovely section across open fields. Then the path takes a route between the buildings, then some holiday lodges and grazing paddocks....

We started this route from Peterston. The route started on a country lane and then headed down a footpath. We altered the route slightly and followed the marked footpath to Cardiff road as the route seemed to take us through a field with no access....

The footpath alongside the drive up to St Fagans museum is shown on the maps as crossing the drive, but it didn't - just stay on the same side of the fence and follow along. There's a bit of an unavoidable slog along the main road from Fairwater, but there's pavement all the way and it didn't take us too long. Would be a 5 star route if there was a way of avoiding the main road but I can't see an obvious one on the maps....

However the path going through the stables at Pant Wilkin is really difficult, there are fences and buildings over the line of the path. This is really frustrating; it has the potential to be a truly lovely route but lack of maintenance, lack of use and non-existent signage have combined to make it really difficult....

MaddyT added Cowpet two, a new walk from Cowbridge to Peterston-super-Ely

Walk this route

Most of this route is easy to navigate, but some of the paths between Cowbridge and Aberthin need maintenance, especially on top of the hill: wobbly stiles & a fence blocking access into a field (not barbed - can be climbed over). It would be easier, if unpleasant, to walk along the main road (pavement all the way, though narrow in places)....

Walk this route

As well as being easy to miss (unmarked and obscured by a fallen tree), it's extremely boggy and blocked by further fallen trees. It seems to be well-used by horse-riders, which makes it arduous to follow; I didn't get very far and don't recommend it....

This is a good route but part of the Barry section is incorrectly marked, which meant I wasted half an hour walking around residential dead-ends, eventually relying on Google Maps. See Petbar2 for a more accurate version....

Walk this route

This is a good route, especially if you start from the top end of Barry, to avoid the urban section. It follows the Millennium Heritage Trail, which is mostly well-marked and well-trodden on this section. Also, it passes the 6000-year-old Tinkinswood Burial Chamber....

Alternative 2: avoid this road completely by using Beauville Lane and the stony track linking Beauville Farm and Wrinstone Farm - longer and hillier but quiet and scenic; however, there’s a section between the farms which is often waterlogged....
