Help connect Barry
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Barry’s Slow Ways.

My first detour was to use Sully Place instead of Archer Road to avoid climbing a flight of stairs, at several other places the route did not seem to align with the footpaths on the ground - so I followed the footpaths rather than the route including crossing Sully Sports Field instead of the Caravan Park (their entrance had a sign pointing out that the public footpath was further down the road), and around Y Rhodfa....

Walked in two sections from Cowbridge to Rhoose and from Rhoose to Barry. A lovely rural walk that is well waymarked. There were a few areas that were a bit overgrown, especially round the edge of Cardiff Airport, but nothing too difficult....

A nice rural walk (once you get out of Barry), easy to follow and well signposted. A bit muddy underfoot in parts but nothing too arduous....

The path goes right past the ancient Tinkinswood Burial Chamber and short detours to the Long Cairn and the National Trust`s Dyffryn Gardens could be made, in the same area. Photo 3 - Tinkinswood Burial Chamber...

The Dinas Powys section is less overgrown than Bardin 2....

After that the path goes inland past round a caravan park and then re-joins the cliff top near some WW2 gun emplacements and after another detour passes sully island....

The section from Penarth to Sully is a lovely walk along the coast (the walk mostly follows the Wales Coast Path anyway)....
Paul Chilcott
Great coastal walk along the cliff tops for most of the way, but also a lower level stretch after the power station....

Great walk along the Wales Coast Path, easy to follow and well marked...

This route is almost entirely on the Wales Coast Path, meaning this is a nice walk along the coast from Penarth to Sully and then a bit of a slog along busy roads from Sully to Barry....

This is a lovely route and can be ran or walked, a bit busy from barry into sully with a few busy roads and lots of cars...but once you reach sully and back on to the coast , the scenery is stunning with a route through two caravan parks which has access to toilets and caffies. This leads into Penarth along the coast into Penarth Town ( which is lovely with lots of cool little shops) I would walk /run this again, with two small busy towns to occupy you on route....

I started this route from Llantwit to Barry, this is a beautiful route with views along the coast....no difficulties, going through two caravan parks and four quiet beaches, then into Porthkerry Park which is stunning. This route has access to toilets and a couple of cafes on route. Highly recommended...

It's mostly let down by about 2km of walking on a path beside a busy road (Ffordd y Mileniwm). I reckon someone could create another route that goes through Barry that avoids busy roads and might even be a bit shorter....

Starts well along the side of Dock Number 1, but then the next bit of this route is on pavement right by the fast and loud Ffordd Mileniwm, which feels really wearing after a while, although the pavement is wide and safe and recently built (at the Millennium, I guess!)....

There's a bit in the middle of this walk which must be the least attractive part of the Wales coast path as it is not on the coast and next to a busy road, so it's a bit of a slog. It picks up again towards the end when you get near the sea....

The path near St Mary's Well Bay can be extremely muddy, especially in winter - but it's also the nicest, most rural part of this route. Between Sully and Barry it's very urban and could be cycled....

This is a good route but part of the Barry section is incorrectly marked, which meant I wasted half an hour walking around residential dead-ends, eventually relying on Google Maps. See Petbar2 for a more accurate version....

Walk this routeThis is a good route, especially if you start from the top end of Barry, to avoid the urban section. It follows the Millennium Heritage Trail, which is mostly well-marked and well-trodden on this section. Also, it passes the 6000-year-old Tinkinswood Burial Chamber....
MaddyT
The Barry to Rhoose section is easy, along the coast path; Rhoose to Cowbridge involves more careful map reading but is well worth the effort. Most of the route was marked and fairly easy to follow across the fields. Between Llantrithyd and St Hilary I recommend staying on the lane: the bridleway included a locked gate and a potentially muddy field, and one of the short footpath sections was blocked by corn....

The footpath running parallel to the A4055 is fine, but I turned back at the place where the route crosses the main road....
MaddyT
This is a flat, fairly easy route with a few stiles. Some sections could be very muddy/waterlogged after rain or when the ground is saturated....
MaddyT
I did this walk in 2 sections: Rhoose to Barry and Rhoose to Llantwit Major. The coast path is about 5 mins walk from Rhoose train station. Both sections are well-marked and easy to navigate with great views of the Bristol Channel....
MaddyT
Didn't actually walk the full route because there's no way I'm walking on the side of the A4055 which is always very busy with fast moving cars. The part I did walk wasn't too bad though....
