Help connect Dinas Powis

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Dinas Powis’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

In Dinas Powys it had me walking on a narrow path with a stream to my right and houses to my left but this route is blocked off by people's front gardens. Large parts of the route just after leaving Dinas Powys were muddy and uneven. 2 stars - Route is sufficiently accurate and passable but neither an efficient or pleasant route 3 stars - Route functions and is either an efficient and direct route that isn't particularly enjoyable or is an enjoyable route that isn't particularly efficient / direct 4 stars - Route functions and is both a pleasant route and a reasonably efficient route between the two points...

Walk this route

Between Dinas Powys and Llandough this is a lovely scenic route however from Penarth Road it's much more urban (but easier terrain). The route is accurate and easy to follow using gps on organic maps although I was glad of the GPS because there is a set of stairs I nearly missed at Dinas Powys, a footpath between two houses in Llandough I nearly missed and I could see how I could have gone wrong at the golf course because it doesn't immediately look like the right way....

A functional and fairly direct mainly urban Slow Way, initially through the back alleys of Penarth, then joining the Ash Path and finally through Murch and Eastbrook suburbia into Dinas Powis. The Ash Path was the highlight and although metalled, there`s a very narrow section through the fields between Penarth and Murch....

Walk this route

A pleasant, easy and varied walk, taking in the barrage half of the Cardiff Bay walk, a lovely stretch of coastal walking along the Penarth promenade and cliff tops and Cosmeston Lake and Country Park before the last stretch through lanes and fields on the way into Dinas Powis. The terrain is mostly paved or well maintained tracks until the section leaving Sully Road to cross the fields to Cross Common Road in Dinas Powis, where there are styles and a muddy lane and fields to cross....

First half very straightforward; second half maybe fine in summer but in winter very muddy and slippery underfoot. Also some unavoidable stiles and a little tricky to find the path after the old pumping station on Penarth Rd!...

After Michaelston-le-pit there the path was less well marked and the stiles are less well maintained, some were quite difficult to negotiate and the path was difficult to follow. On getting to the Leckwith woods the path as marked on the OS map was blocked off, but there were plenty of alternatives ways through the wood to Old Leckwith Bridge....

It's mostly let down by about 2km of walking on a path beside a busy road (Ffordd y Mileniwm). I reckon someone could create another route that goes through Barry that avoids busy roads and might even be a bit shorter....

Starts well along the side of Dock Number 1, but then the next bit of this route is on pavement right by the fast and loud Ffordd Mileniwm, which feels really wearing after a while, although the pavement is wide and safe and recently built (at the Millennium, I guess!)....

I did this route with Rhiwbina Runaways we started at Dinas Powys train station there were no toilet facilities at the strat, and some parts were off road. There were parts that were very over grown and had a lot of stingy nettles and giant stys to climb over, so could be unsuitable for wheelchair and buggy users. However, it was a very scenic route once we got to cosmeston lakes we were able to use the toilet facilities....

Fromm Dinas Powis railway station the route runs parallel for a short while and then connects with a housing estate. The route is fairly flat all the way with a couple of short inclines. Finally approaching Penarth railway station the last mile is characterised by a number of short cuts through rear lanes to the local houses to complete the journey....

The climb to the top of Lechwedd is tricky through the wood as much of the undergrowth is starting to blur the way but the view of Penarth from the top is spectacular from that angle. The decent through the wood is nice and then you exit by Leckwith Bridge to cross towards Cardiff City Stadium....

There's a bit in the middle of this walk which must be the least attractive part of the Wales coast path as it is not on the coast and next to a busy road, so it's a bit of a slog. It picks up again towards the end when you get near the sea....
