Description

This route is almost the same as Petbar1 with a couple of differences in Barry:
1) a more direct route on the hill above the train station, along Romilly Road
2) a more accurate route between Severn Avenue and Colcot Road (along Bramble Avenue, Blackberry Drive & Thistle Close with a path leading to Greenbanks Drive) - or this section could be avoided by following the A4050 (Jenner Road/Colcot Road) between Romilly Primary School and Barry Hospital

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A nice rural walk (once you get out of Barry), easy to follow and well signposted. A bit muddy underfoot in parts but nothing too arduous.

January 2023. Direction: Peterston-super-Ely to Barry.

An excellent rural walk through fields, lanes and tracks mostly following the Valeways Millennium Heritage Trail. It is well signed and the gates, styles and bridges are all in good condition. Even in January the path looked well walked and visible for most of the way. The path goes right past the ancient Tinkinswood Burial Chamber and short detours to the Long Cairn and the National Trust`s Dyffryn Gardens could be made, in the same area.

This is a good route, especially if you start from the top end of Barry, to avoid the urban section. It follows the Millennium Heritage Trail, which is mostly well-marked and well-trodden on this section. Also, it passes the 6000-year-old Tinkinswood Burial Chamber.
There are buses from Peterstone to Cardiff roughly every 2 hours, or half-hourly from St Nicholas (Mon-Sat).
