Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Paul Chilcott

06 Jan 2024 (edited 07 Jan 2024) Winter

January 2024. Direction: Peterston-super-Ely to Llanharry.

A very good and typical "vale" walk through lanes and fields, with a little bit of woodland walking here and there. This was the first fine day after an excessive period of rain at the end of 2023 and early 2024, so it was very muddy, wet and very hard going, but just about managed ok in my trusty boots. It follows the Valeways footpath for quite a long way (Photo 1). It`s reasonably well signed, although several of the Valeways markers have been removed from their posts along the way. The only issue I had with navigation was at Maes yr Haul Farm, just before the village of Pendoylan - the path is signposted from both ends on the lanes, but there was a tied gate in the fields. If you`re not happy to climb tied gates, there is a short detour (maybe a couple of hundred metres further) around the lanes. There are a couple of very noisy but short sections running alongside the M4 on the way into Llanharry. Otherwise, the route was clear and very enjoyable, despite the hard slog through the fields after all the rain.
