Description

This route is the same as Cowpet1 between Cowbridge & Aberthin, then veers north to Welsh St Donats and picks up the route of Cowpet1 just south of Hensol Forest. It's easier underfoot than Cowpet1. There's a stretch of road skirting Hensol Forest, but it's a very quiet lane

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

17 Feb 2024 Winter

February 2024. Direction: Peterston-super-Ely to Cowbridge.

Another typical Vale of Glamorgan fields and lanes walk. Some of the early stages follow the Valeways waymarked footpath(s) and are well signed and easy to follow. The only section that wasn`t obvious was between Gaer Wood up to where the footpath emerges at Crossways, where a couple of direction markers were missing and it was so easy to just follow the Valeways markers. The only other issue was just outside Aberthin, as already pointed out in an earlier review, where there was a tied gate after leaving Pen-y-Lan lane, which I had to jump. A thoroughly enjoyable walk overall.

Most of this route is easy to navigate, but some of the paths between Cowbridge and Aberthin need maintenance, especially on top of the hill: wobbly stiles & a fence blocking access into a field (not barbed - can be climbed over). It would be easier, if unpleasant, to walk along the main road (pavement all the way, though narrow in places).
