Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Lightwater’s Slow Ways.

Pavements on both sides of A30 London Road run the whole length....

Either end is pleasant: woods outside Ascot and fields on the approach to Lightwater. There is a choice of pub break points in Windlesham: The Half Moon on Church Road, The Bee on School Road, and The Windmill on the A30. Main roads are finally escaped for the approach to Ascot train station: through woods (Photo 6) and past a church....

The Slow Way begins at Bracknell train station and there is an urban walk south to the edge of Swinley Forest. This stretch passes landmarks such as Bill Hill Bronze Age Barrow, with carvings (Photo 1), Point Royal (Photo 2) and South Hill Park. There is an urban walk through Bagshot, under the railway (Photo 6)....

Walk this routeWhen you cross the wide Victory Lane, watch out for the Trinity Methodist church (photo 1) and turn right after it into a paved footpath. When the route passes a couple of houses, it turns left into a narrow footpath just before an electrically operated wide gate - see photo 3. Once the route reaches Bagshot Road, there is not always a pavement next to the road but the road edge is wide enough for pedestrians - see photo 8. Only the turn to a narrow footpath after a junction with Guildford Road is a bit concealed - see photo 10....

One thing to watch out for is a public bypass of the Broadoak farm approx. There are steps right next to the wide gate but they are overgrown and it doesn't look like a genuine public footpath at all....

This route mostly leads along a military shooting range where there is a fence with a barbed wire on one side. The approach to Frimley is through a wooded area with many crisscrossing footpaths so it doesn't matter too much if walkers don't hit the right one. It is easy to follow, safe and I would recommend it to others....

Walk this routeThere are steps right next to the wide gate but they are overgrown and it doesn't look like a genuine public footpath at all. There is a nice wide farm track along the stream but the public footpath leads on the other side of a fence between the wide farm track and the stream. I couldn't continue so I went on the farm track but it is closed off by a gate when it approaches Youngstroat Lane....

I started walking the route at Ottershaw and the first 1 km next to playing fields has a pavement next to them. On the other hand, the rest of the route led through quiet woods, fields and meadows and I'd praise is highly if it was not for one spot where the route seems to go through an inaccessible section....

Leaving Ascot town center, there is either a road with a pavement down to the train station or as the route suggests a wide direct pavement from the racecourse car park straight to a subway under the station. When the route reaches Bagshot Road there is still a pavement for some 400m but then it stops. There was a locked iron gate across the road where the footpath emerged on Church Road but pedestrians can go past it via a gate on the side....

I started my outing at Lightwater and as it happened on a similar route out of Lightwater a couple of months ago I missed the entry to woods near the end of Guildford Road. I was walking along this stretch of the route only a couple of days after rainy days and the bit between Heath-hill Farm and Deep Poole Lane leads through a narrow footpath which is borded by wired electric fences on both sides. Otherwise, a slightly modified route avoiding Heath-hill Farm could be an option....

I started from Camberley and the route to the town edge required only occasional checks of the gpx line. The rest of the route to the center of Lightwater is probably the shortest one and there are pavements along the whole way from the Country Park to central Lightwater....

A route through the Longcross estate seems to be guarded at several locations so walkers would likely be reminded of their rights if they strayed from the marked public footpath. The most problematic leg of this route is the last stretch before Virginia Water where it is supposed to follow a public footpath through the woods and next to pens protected by fence and barbed wire on both sides. I would definitely not walk this route again unless local authorities or whoever is responsible restore this footpath starting at Bog wood and leading up to the edge of Virginia Water....

Crossing over Nine Mile Ride is dangerous - there are traffic lights just to the east, which would be a better crossing. Walking through Swinley Forest is nice, but difficult to navigate as there are numerous paths and rides that are not signposted, so need to either be naturally good at directions or have gps. Agree that finishing point in dead area of Lightwater odd when the route goes close to Bagshot with a bus stop, shops, pubs etc...

The route follows quiet footpaths in both Bracknell and Lightwater and the middle part leads through the Swinley forest where there is plenty of opportunities to sit down on a log or in a shielded spot....
