Description

This is a desk designed route. I'm aware that parts of the B3020 in the middle have no pavement, but this was the best option I could find. Maybe a local would have better ideas. It is difficult to see from the OS Map but there is a subway under Ascot Station

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Leaving Ascot town center, there is either a road with a pavement down to the train station or as the route suggests a wide direct pavement from the racecourse car park straight to a subway under the station. The route than continues next to a church down a footpath. When it emerges you need to watch out for Friary Road. There is a sign "Private Road" but nothing to suggest that it is not accessible for walking members of public. The next part leads through a neighborhood full of gated mansion houses.

When the route reaches Bagshot Road there is still a pavement for some 400m but then it stops. The road edge on the right is still relatively wide to enable one to step aside when a car is approaching. The critical point, however, is right after a crossroads with Coronation Road. A high holly is right next to the road and with poor visibility it is rather dangerous to walk there esp. with fast approaching vehicles. There is nowhere to step aside and cars don't expect any walkers.

A pavement resumes on the border between Berkshire and Surrey. The rest of the route is fairly easy to follow. Only the footpath off Kennel is quite narrow and easy to miss. I found it somewhat muddy even after a couple of days without rain. There was a locked iron gate across the road where the footpath emerged on Church Road but pedestrians can go past it via a gate on the side.

The last section leads via footpaths towards a bridge above the motorway and further down to Lightwater.
