Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

28 Jul 2023It is mostly a very good, quiet a well shaded route through Surrey countryside. One drawback is that the paths it follows are not always well maintained and if I didn't have long trousers I would be stung all over by nettles and scratched by thorny bramble canes.
One thing to watch out for that I missed when I was following 'Ligott one', which share part of the route, is the public bypass of the Broadoak farm approx. 5km from Lightwater. A sign on the gate to the farm makes it clear that the owner doesn't want anyone who is not invited to enter it. There is a way round the gate but it's easy to overlook. There are steps right next to the wide gate but they are overgrown and it doesn't look like a genuine public footpath at all. It is, however, the only way of avoiding Broadoak farm. See a photo.
I would not recommend this route though and the main reason is the section between Philpot lane and Youngstroat Lane. There is a nice wide farm track along the stream but the public footpath leads on the other side of a fence between the wide farm track and the stream. The footpath is overgrown with brambles and other weeds and it is at times impassable. I couldn't continue so I went on the farm track but it is closed off by a gate when it approaches Youngstroat Lane. I had to climb over it.
There is also an unnecessary detour when the route approaches Paragon Roundabout before Ottershaw. I found a direct way through the forest and there is no need to walk along Chertsey Road. I'm going to create another route that hopefully eliminates some disadvantages of this one.
