This is a good safe and reasonably pleasant route between Virginia Water and Chertsey, via Thorpe. The second part of the route is on footpaths between lakes and past Thorpe Park amusement park....

Walk this routeI started at Virginia Water and soon had to turn back, towards the end of Trumps Mill Lane where the lane turns into a footpath, due to intimidating guard dogs (more than one). They were large, well trained, and although they started by barking at me from behind a hedge, eventually they came out in the lane itself and blocked the path. Their job was to see off anyone walking along the lane and it worked....

I started with a bit of road walking at the Virginia Water end along Stroude Road. The crossing point where Whitehall Lane joins Stroude Road is on a bend, so care must be taken to ensure clear passage (if walking direction Virginia Water to Egham). I think there may be a 5 star route to be had, making use of the bridle path which joins Stroude Road at Stroude farm, and then approaching Virginia Water from the West side of the railway....

You must venture through a horse fields, climb a fence, go through many styles, cross roads, walk on rocky road and go through a large overgrown patch that will appeal to many but not to others. It is not accessible to those with disabilities but can be fun...

I can only add that when the route turns to a horse trail at the beginning of the Windsor Great Park, you can follow it right up to the Blacknest Gate. There is no need to follow any alternative footpath branching off the horse trail. No cycles are allowed on the horse trail but there are signs warning riders against pedestrians so there should be no problem with access....

The initial part via Course Road has no pavements for pedestrians, but it's a very quiet residential street and then a little-used road behind the racecourse (unless, presumably, there's a race on) so walking in the road itself is not a problem. It's also much more pleasant than walking along London Road. Between Winkfield Road and Cheapside Road the path can be very muddy, especially after heavy rain....

Walk this routeThe route comes to a bad start in Chertsey when it suggests to approach Bell Bridge Road from the station via Fox Lane North and a car park....

As the route continues along Lyne Lane, there is no road edge and there is often not much space to step aside when cars are approaching....

A route through the Longcross estate seems to be guarded at several locations so walkers would likely be reminded of their rights if they strayed from the marked public footpath. The most problematic leg of this route is the last stretch before Virginia Water where it is supposed to follow a public footpath through the woods and next to pens protected by fence and barbed wire on both sides. I would definitely not walk this route again unless local authorities or whoever is responsible restore this footpath starting at Bog wood and leading up to the edge of Virginia Water....
