25 Aug 2024A mixture of road and path walking. Nice and direct with only one small part on the road with no pavement. Need to navigate a stile and a kissing gate.

11 Aug 2024I found the route easy to follow, pleasant and fairly quiet. In the middle of August, there were plenty of ripe brambleberries in the middle section along Whitehall Lane. There was even a plum tree with ripe plums next to the gate at Crown Cottages.

07 Jul 2023Walked Virginia Water to Egham.
Overall I found it a good route, accurately drawn, with plenty of pleasant footpaths to enjoy.
I started with a bit of road walking at the Virginia Water end along Stroude Road. At some point the pavement reduces to one side of the road only, and at one point it was so overgrown with nettles I had to step off for a bit (photo 2). This is the sort of road where busy people drive fast and delivery drivers nip in and out of turnings.
The crossing point where Whitehall Lane joins Stroude Road is on a bend, so care must be taken to ensure clear passage (if walking direction Virginia Water to Egham).
The whole passage along Whitehall Lane is delightful; I think there’s a small chance there could be cows, but the interlinked fields create a massive estate, and I didn’t see any. The sun shone, butterflies fluttered, and generally this is a very good path, although there are gates, one quite tight (photo 4), and a stile (photo 7).
There’s a very short section of lane walking with no pavement on Prune Hill (photo 10). There’s a little traffic, but everyone was considerate and kept their speed down and moved across for me. Yes!!
There follows a very good footpath all the way into Egham.
At Egham there is a bridge across the railway, with steps. It is very easy to avoid the steps by continuing to walk on the south side of the railway all the way to Egham station. However, by crossing to the north side at this point I discovered the Forester’s Arms, where I stopped off for some refreshment.
After that it was a short stroll to Egham station and the end of the route.
I’ve taken a star off for Stroude Road. I think there may be a 5 star route to be had, making use of the bridle path which joins Stroude Road at Stroude farm, and then approaching Virginia Water from the West side of the railway.
