Help connect Egham
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Egham’s Slow Ways.

The route out of Wraysbury takes a footpath by Wraysbury North lake (Photo 1). A narrow footpath parallels the rail track from Wraysbury Station....

A Slow Way which crosses Windsor Great Park, for the most part keeping to the wide tarmacked lanes. There is an urban walk out of Ascot, to reach the Ascot Gate into Windsor Great Park (Photo 1)....

A mixture of road and path walking. Nice and direct with only one small part on the road with no pavement. Need to navigate a stile and a kissing gate....

In the middle of August, there were plenty of ripe brambleberries in the middle section along Whitehall Lane. There was even a plum tree with ripe plums next to the gate at Crown Cottages....

Off Stroude Road there are large wet areas next to the path before crossing the M25 but the path was dry....

Steps at Staines Bridge if you follow the Thames Path signs....

I've not attempted this whole walk but as someone local to the area, I can also confirm that the section flagged by the other two reviewers between Whitehall Ln and Stroude Rd was impassible on all 3 occassions I've attempted it. On a bad day you won't even be able to cross the field coming from the Whitehall Lane end and even when I attempted this in the middle of one of the recent very hot summers it wasn't much better and there's the obvious risk you might get stuck somewhere and not be able to get out without assistance. Obviously I'm curious if anyone has ever navigated this, how, what time of year and what the weather was like beforehand....

I walked from Egham to Wraysbury and the first mile and half plus was on roads, with the stretch beyond the major roundabout north of the High Street particularly unpleasant as it runs parallel to the A30 and M25....

It takes you pass Thorpe park which is one of my favourite places and you can see a fair share of wildlife....

This is a pretty good route considering there are some major obstacles in between the two towns: M3, M25, an amusement park, and a lake or two. Coming into Egham along the Stroude Road is acceptable but takes the shine off; the rest of the route is close to 5 stars imo....

I can put up a revised version which keeps the Thorpe part of the walk, then uses the okayish road between Egham and Stroude; and maybe also scope out a route using Whitehall Lane, which is the best way to approach Egham from the South West....

I started with a bit of road walking at the Virginia Water end along Stroude Road. The crossing point where Whitehall Lane joins Stroude Road is on a bend, so care must be taken to ensure clear passage (if walking direction Virginia Water to Egham). I think there may be a 5 star route to be had, making use of the bridle path which joins Stroude Road at Stroude farm, and then approaching Virginia Water from the West side of the railway....

The route is accurately drawn; the amount of A and B road between Egham and the river could be reduced (e.g. by crossing the National Trust field which is part of the Runnymede NT area) - but I don’t think it’s worth making a completely new route option for this. Path surfaces vary from pavement to narrow, steep and somewhat muddy footpath through woodland; and there are stairs at Staines bridge....

The main part of this route leads through the Windsor Great Park via the few routes accessible to the public....

The reason for the 1 star was because the route across a field which had a notice on the gate warning of the path being muddy....

Good walking route although would be a little tricky for non able bodied persons as there is a little bit of rough track. This may be avoided if one headed into hotel grounds at The Runnymeade and picked up the Thames Path from there. Made a pleasant walk....
Philipj8
Not suitable for wheelchairs as the path is narrow and there are stiles to cross to cross the railway line. The path could be very muddy at the Wraysbury end and also the brambles and nettles were spreading on to the path running along beside the railway. Otherwise a nice quiet walk away from most roads....
