Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

23 Jul 2022The first problem I came across on my way from Lightwater was that I couldn't find a forest path from Guildford Road to the roundabout on Lightwater By-pass. No harm done as I just walked along the Guildford Road. The way through Gordon's school is well signposted so the next part was easy. The next part is straightforward with the help of an GPS app. However, I missed the turn behind the LGB Riding School and had to come back a bit. Walkers then mostly go next to horse pens, sometimes among the curious horses themselves.
The following leg is also nice and easy to follow and leads through the middle of a heathland. A route through the Longcross estate seems to be guarded at several locations so walkers would likely be reminded of their rights if they strayed from the marked public footpath.
A walk along Longcross Lane is not particularly enjoyable or safe but visibility is good and there is always a bit of room on the edge of the road to avoid speeding cars.
The most problematic leg of this route is the last stretch before Virginia Water where it is supposed to follow a public footpath through the woods and next to pens protected by fence and barbed wire on both sides. It is clear from signage and posts that there used to be a public footpath but it has evidently not been maintained for many years. It is all overgrown, sometimes leading on boggy ground and full of brambles. I had shorts and my legs were so scratched that I had to leave this path and find whatever passable way there was to reach the destination. I would definitely not walk this route again unless local authorities or whoever is responsible restore this footpath starting at Bog wood and leading up to the edge of Virginia Water. It is a pity because otherwise, the route would be quite enjoyable.
