Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Brookwood’s Slow Ways.

This is a gentle straightforward walk, mostly along the canal towpath, with some residential streets at Frimley Green and Farnborough. Also, at Frimley Green the route is drawn to walk around the green on the roads, but there is a good direct footpath across the green which makes more sense and is nicer....

Once the route passes Frimley Green it joins Basingstoke canal towpath. I attach a photo warning about a potential closure of the route and a another one showing a quiet stretch of the route....

There are swans with signets in season, usually two families join together with up to ten signets....

Plesent walk along the canal. asy and safe. Can be very muddy in places...

The only sounds that accompanied me on my walk were gunshots in the nearby military shooting range...

Walk this routeThis route has an advantage over Browok1, in that it has apparently been walked and recorded precisely with a .gpx file, whereas Browok1, as a succcession of straight lines, appears to have been created differently....

Going along the canal, you're able to see lots of wildlife whilst also going through a few villages. However, there are quite a few small hills that could be challenging to those who can't walk, alongside the terrain which can be very muddy outside of summertime....

Almost entirely off road, flat and step free - although there are one or two points where the path is a little narrow and some mud after rain (not much). I very much enjoyed this walk on an early spring day, plenty of ducks on the water and primroses in the woods. I made this new version which is slightly amended from Browok One, and corrects a problem where it needs to be clear that the path crosses the canal....

This is a generally very good route following the Basingstoke canal towpath - but it is not drawn quite accurately enough, and at about the half way point where the towpath crosses sides, the route sent me down the wrong side of the canal, and I had to back track. I've made a new route version Browok Two which corrects this problem, and I recommend walking that one....

The first section from Frimley utilises the Blackwater Valley path (follow the signs for Blackwater Valley Path South) which is a good flat surface but slightly muddy in places after wet weather. The next section is a surfaced path between the gravel pits (now fishing lakes) and a foot level crossing over the railway line before entering Frimley Green. After the last lock (Lock 15) at Brookwood the towpath changes sides and becomes a surfaced path all the way to Brookwood station....
Walker1
The firing range was closed to the public the day I walked it so had to continue further on the busy road then walk on a narrow and fairly steep path alongside the firing range fence. The rest of the walk was fine, easy to walk and enjoyable but I would always choose a differnt route over this one to avoid having to use the dangerous road....

After walking along the footpath alongside the roads from Farnborough, the route crosses the A331 and passes the fishing lakes and through a quiet residential area to Frimley Green. From here the route was straight down the canal to Brookwood. Unfortunately after wet weather the canal towpath can bet quite muddy so take some waterproof footwear....

A little narrow in place due to the undergrowth (as walk done in July and brambles and nettles have shot up). Also could be a little muddy in places if there had been more rain. However a very nice walk in the shade by the water....

Checked the MOD website for Ash Range and after a little searching found July's restricted times....
Philipj8
Excellent direct route following the Basingstoke Canal along very smooth paved towpath....
Philipj8
After a scenic start along the canal it passes through some semi suburban off road paths around Ash, but then opens up into attractive woods and meadows for the second half of the walk....
