I split this route in 2, on the first day walking South Molton to Molland, and then on to Dulverton for the 2nd day. Between Molland and Dulverton the route is more hilly, but once you get up to the top of Bedlake Lane there is a fairly level lane walk along a ridge until the descent in to Dulverton....

Walk this routeOnce past the school, the easterly track was very muddy with a lot of surface water until we ascended and entered the woodland....

As the others have mentioned, there is a mix of footpaths and lanes, but the lanes are very quiet, the least quiet being from Langley to Burrow Cross, but you can't call it busy....
Helen Gough
Great hilly walk through rural Devon, with great views at the top of the hills. I imagine that ordinarily you can just step over it, but there was more water in the stream than normal, so it was a bit of a stretch....
Helen Gough
It wasn't the worst bog I've had to walk through, but it's another reason to avoid the horse field. Leaving Heasley Mill there is a steep climb over rough ground, probably the worst path on the route, and the reason it is a grade 4 route. The walk between North and South Molton through Holdridge Woods would normally be a highlight I think....
Helen Gough
The Tramway has plenty of foraging opportunity if you know what you're doing. As you reach the peek of Exmoor, on a clear day, you can see Dartmoor all the way from where you walked. Then you head down a breathtaking valley into Simonsbath....

Beautiful hills & valleys, although the public footpath leading to George Nympton had a lot of sealed closed gates you'll have to climb over as they're very old, haven't been repaired & would simply fall over without being tied shut. So you won't see the public footpaths signs, keep an eye on your maps! South Molton is also essential just before Exmoor as it's the only place I've seen since Plymouth that has a standard supermarket, Stansbury, allowing you to top up your food without crazy prices....

Ben Totterdell added Barsou three, a new walk from Barnstaple to South Molton
Walk this routeThe exception is the section between Filleigh and Nags Head. There is a pub at Nags Head and others just off route at Swimbridge and Landkey....
Tim Ryan
Most of the walk is high up, so the views are fantastic when they appear, but watch out for the wind!...
Helen Gough
Only one muddy path which, considering the rain we have had lately, was not as muddy as expected....
Jane Gough
This is a well-designed route, given the lack of footpaths....

Walk this routeThis route is plotted through Whitehills Plantation and Locks Plantation where there is no right of way. BarSou2 is an alternative....
Helen Gough
I really liked the 2nd half of the walk, which in my case was Collacott to Barnstaple which I would give 4 stars, but the first half being mostly lanes was only a 3 for me....
Helen Gough
I chose to take the farm track around to the East and South so as not to damage the crop, but I suspect this route may be muddy in winter or after a long rainy period....

Helen Gough added Umbsou two, a new walk from Umberleigh to South Molton
Walk this routeI will not attempt to walk all this route as there are altenatives using more minor roads....

Long road sections, but on quiet "safe" lanes makes for an enjoyable route. Some very nice wooded sections on footpaths,,...

Route uses fast and dangerous roads for than half of the journey. Route takes you through two farms on a track which is not a public right of way....
