07 Dec 2022An excellent route. Quite a bit of road walking, but most of this is on very quiet country lanes. The exception is the section between Filleigh and Nags Head. Many heavy vehicles use this road. However, there is a wide grass verge on the south side for much of this 2 mile section and through Filleigh it is paved. I always felt safe on the road. The rest of the route is excellent . I walked it in winter and the offroad sections were in good condition. There is a pub at Nags Head and others just off route at Swimbridge and Landkey. There are stiles, steps and gates on the offroad sections.

21 May 2022There is a lot of lane walking on this route which is OK as the lanes are quiet, but the hedgerow does limit the views, and this is countryside worth seeing. When they do appear however, they are really worth it.
Through Filleigh the road is busier, but still OK, and there is a path or verge all the way.
I really liked the path through Rubble Hills (much nicer than it sounds) but the path isn't cleared, and you have to walk through vegetation and there are a couple of trees down. It's not difficult, but I do think this area would be quite mucky in the winter.
There are plenty of facilities in both Barnstaple and South Molton, but the only place to stop in-between on this route is the Stags Head Pub which is 3 miles from South Molton.
I really liked the 2nd half of the walk, which in my case was Collacott to Barnstaple which I would give 4 stars, but the first half being mostly lanes was only a 3 for me.
