I found this to be a very enjoyable and safe route, which was easy to follow, There is an access issue at Arshaton Wood however, The forest road at SS 65931 20940 had a locked gate with signs indicating it is private land and that there is no public access....

There is a short section on the B3266 at Methe, which is busy - but I found it to be quite comfortable....
Tim Ryan
Rather than using the road from Chittlehamholt down towards the River Taw, I walked north out of the village then took a left on it's extremity down into Shortridge Wood....
Paul Coverdale
Once past the school, the easterly track was very muddy with a lot of surface water until we ascended and entered the woodland....

Lucky for me my dog was able to get underneath or around these gates. Some of the gates I could open, but struggled to close again, again because they were broken and were heavy. The walk is all open country until close to Umberleigh where there is a really nice walk through Pitt Wood....
Helen Gough
Nice walk when on footpaths, and a lovely bit which goes down a small stream. I'd say about a third of the walk is on small country roads...
Oli Sturdy
The route uses quiet residential streets to leave the town, then at the football club transferring to footpaths across fields, before quite long sections of lane walking, with Dartmoor looming in the distance. The lanes are quiet, and in winter provide easy walking, however even the footpaths and fields weren't too muddy....
Helen Gough
Most of the walk is high up, so the views are fantastic when they appear, but watch out for the wind!...
Helen Gough
Only one muddy path which, considering the rain we have had lately, was not as muddy as expected....
Jane Gough
This is a well-designed route, given the lack of footpaths....

Helen Gough added Umbchu three, a new walk from Umberleigh to Chulmleigh
Walk this routeHelen Gough added Greumb two, a new walk from Great Torrington to Umberleigh
Walk this routeHelen Gough added Umbsou two, a new walk from Umberleigh to South Molton
Walk this routeThis route is dangerous as more than half of it is walking along the B3227, a fast road with no pavement....
Helen Gough
Very enjoyable apart from slightly dicey walk along stream bed which didn't last too long. Best avoided after heavy rain. Otherwise recommended for scenery and views....
Jane Gough
The footbridge over the stream at Hoe looks to be on its last legs, but the stream is shallow and narrow, so can be stepped over if the bridge gives up. From Heaton, Cleave Lane has eroded and you have to walk along the shallow stream....
Helen Gough
I will not attempt to walk all this route as there are altenatives using more minor roads....

Walk this routeI walked this route today and really enjoyed it. There might be another good route that goes around the east of Codden Hill? This route misses out on 5 stars simply because of that challenging stream, walking along the A377 (on a path) and some narrow lane walking which some people will not like....
danravenellison
The route meanders through lots of charming lanes, tracks and paths, passing woods, farms and good some views. The B3226 makes it really tricky to create a safe route using rights of way for this Slow Way....
danravenellison
Route uses fast and dangerous roads for than half of the journey. Route takes you through two farms on a track which is not a public right of way....
