28 Jan 2023I enjoyed this route, it's a great winter walk. I walked from Torrington to Umberleigh. The route uses quiet residential streets to leave the town, then at the football club transferring to footpaths across fields, before quite long sections of lane walking, with Dartmoor looming in the distance.
The lanes are quiet, and in winter provide easy walking, however even the footpaths and fields weren't too muddy.
The mid way point on this walk is also the highest point and the views from here are epic. On one side there are views to Exmoor, Dartmoor is on the other, and there are rolling hills in all directions. It feels like the top of the world. The views might not be quite as vast at other times of the year, as the lanes are edged by hedgerow which was cut back when I walked.
At the Umberleigh end there is a short section walking on the B3227 which isn't much fun, but i cant see a sensible alternative. It doesn't last long though, and there are wide verges to walk on if necessary, so I felt safe.
There are 2 villages on the route, but no facilities in either. Plenty of places to eat and drink in Torrington, but just one pub in Umberleigh. All in all a very enjoyable walk.
