12 Apr 2024A great route, very enjoyable with some stunning views. Quite a lot of the route is on lanes, but these were very quiet hardly anything on them. There is a short section on the B3266 at Methe, which is busy - but I found it to be quite comfortable. I had to untie a couple of gates tied with twine and the path at the bottom of Pitt Wood near Umberleigh was very muddy. However overall it is a lovely walk. There are stiles. The Grove Inn at Kings Nympton does food.

30 Mar 2024A rural route through mid Devon countryside. It's hilly, so you'll burn some calories. There is a lot of lane walking, but that's what I wanted today with the land saturated from a very wet winter. There were some great views from the lanes, but I was able to see over the hedgerow, which won't be possible in the summer.
I walked from Chulmleigh to Umberleigh so Dartmoor was behind me, and Exmoor ahead. Whichever way you walk it remember to look behind you for the views.
The route was straightforward until around South Ash. Here all the field gates were broken, some held up with string. It's blimmin hard to undo a knot when the weight of a gate is on it, so I climbed them. Lucky for me my dog was able to get underneath or around these gates. Some of the gates I could open, but struggled to close again, again because they were broken and were heavy. There was one high stile that my dog was able to jump, but less agile dogs will struggle without help. The other part that is hard for dogs is the walkway under the railway at Umberleigh. I've put a picture in the survey. I always carry my dog over that, and he hates it!
The walk is all open country until close to Umberleigh where there is a really nice walk through Pitt Wood. Sections from there until the end were very muddy, but as I said it's been an exceptionally wet winter, and even so a decent pair of boots will get you through.
Lovely walk, I dropped a star just because of the difficulties I had around South Ash.
