Description

This is a great hike that uses paths, quiet lanes, bridleways and forest tracks.

Warning: It's hard to create a route between Umberleigh and Chulmleigh because of the B3226, which is fast road that is not safe to walk along. The River Mole is an additional natural obstacle. To complete this route I followed the track through Arshaton Wood, approaching it from north of Mole Cottage B&B. Mole Cottage is on the B3226, just across from the footbridge that crosses the River Mole. Someone local informed me that there is access along the woodland track and described where to go, but when getting to the southern end it became clear that access on this route is clearly disputed. There are some signs asking people to stick to public rights of way. The person I met confidently said that the route should have been mapped as a right of way...

I'm going to give this route some stars and kind words, but when asked if it's good enough to be in the network enter "maybe" until someone confirms the level of access. Proceed with caution and a friendly manner!

Do you know a better way between Umberleigh and Chulmleigh? One that's safe enough and has no access issues?

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
