Nice walk when on footpaths, and a lovely bit which goes down a small stream.
I'd say about a third of the walk is on small country roads.

Very enjoyable apart from slightly dicey walk along stream bed which didn't last too long. Best avoided after heavy rain. Otherwise recommended for scenery and views. Would definitely walk again.

I love this walk. Apart from the walk through Barnstaple it is through peaceful countryside. The route follows woodland footpaths, riverside walks and quiet lanes. There are some muddy sections, but they are short, and easily passable.

The footbridge over the stream at Hoe looks to be on its last legs, but the stream is shallow and narrow, so can be stepped over if the bridge gives up. From Heaton, Cleave Lane has eroded and you have to walk along the shallow stream. With waterproof boots and care, it is also passable.
If you get your timing right, you can get a fantastic Sunday Roast at the dog friendly Chichester Arms in Bishops Tawton without deviating from the route. Result!
Am looking forward to walking this route again.
Update - Footbridge at Hoe, DCC are working on building a new boardwalk.

10 Feb 2022 (edited 16 Feb 2022) Winter

I walked this route today and really enjoyed it. Some stunning views, fascinating old buildings, birds of prey constantly in the sky and... in the direction I walked it... a pleasure to arrive in Barnstaple.

The eastern half of Cleave Lane is heavily eroded by a stream. I enjoyed sensitively and adventurously making my way along the path, but some people might struggle with this section... especially after heavy rain.

I love how Hjgough has put this route together. It's not only a great walk, it also helps with the collaborative process of finding a good way to connect Barnstaple and Umberleigh. Barumb One is dangerous (as it follows the main road) and Barumb Two, this route, replaces that.

There might be another good route that goes around the east of Codden Hill? It would likely be a bit further, but could be a good additional option maybe.

This route misses out on 5 stars simply because of that challenging stream, walking along the A377 (on a path) and some narrow lane walking which some people will not like.

Live in Barnstaple? Why not catch the train to Umberleigh and then walk back again?.
