29 Dec 2023Great hilly walk through rural Devon, with great views at the top of the hills. There is a fair amount of lane walking, but as I did this route after a lot of rain, I was pleased about that.
The ground was saturated when I walked, so the footpaths and bridleways were muddy, but not as bad as I expected. Quite often they were stony, so the mud wasn't deep. There was just one short horrific section through a pig sty which was vile. There were no pigs when I went, but the mud was deep. Someone had thrown in a few stones, which can be used to step on, but there weren't enough. Yuk! There was a sign telling you to keep to the path - that made me laugh out loud! I would have loved a path to stick to. However, that was the worst part, and was probably no more than 10 metres long.
There was one tricky stream crossing as well. I imagine that ordinarily you can just step over it, but there was more water in the stream than normal, so it was a bit of a stretch.
There are pubs at both Kings Nympton and George Nympton.

17 Aug 2023A fairly simple trail compared to the previous with a few towns along the way to stop at. Beautiful hills & valleys, although the public footpath leading to George Nympton had a lot of sealed closed gates you'll have to climb over as they're very old, haven't been repaired & would simply fall over without being tied shut. So you won't see the public footpaths signs, keep an eye on your maps!
South Molton is also essential just before Exmoor as it's the only place I've seen since Plymouth that has a standard supermarket, Stansbury, allowing you to top up your food without crazy prices.

20 May 2022A lovely walk between these two towns. It does have long road sections, but these are quiet and with very nice views, so still make for an enjoyable walk. The path marked on the map and signed between Venn Farm and South Ash was through a field of Barley at the time of this review. I chose to take the farm track around to the East and South so as not to damage the crop, but I suspect this route may be muddy in winter or after a long rainy period. There is a pub at Kings Nympton, The Grove Inn.
