28 Dec 2023Great walk, definitely recommend. I walked from Simonsbath to South Molton. According to my watch I climbed over 1300 feet, but decended over 1900ft, so it's the easier way!
The route starts with a lot of lane walking and a steady 1 mile climb out of Simonsbath. After an exceptionally wet autumn and winter I was glad of the hard surfaces. These lanes are all quiet, so felt safe, and they are open often without hedgerow so the views are fantastic.
After reaching the highest point on the walk, the route heads off Exmoor and there are some immense views in the direction you are heading, which means you get to enjoy them for longer.
It takes 5.5 miles to get to the first stile and footpath, just after Bentwitchen. Unfortunately for me, it goes across a field with anti-dog horses in. They were not happy to see me and my dog in their field, and made their feelings known. They followed us halfway across the field, getting bored before trampling us - phew! They didn't seem to be interested in me, but if I was to do this walk again with my dog, I would avoid this field by taking the lane through Lower Fyldon instead. Leaving the field is another stile, and then a short boggy section before getting on to the lane. It wasn't the worst bog I've had to walk through, but it's another reason to avoid the horse field.
Leaving Heasley Mill there is a steep climb over rough ground, probably the worst path on the route, and the reason it is a grade 4 route. At the top of the climb the route once again gets back on to lanes, and then heads through North Molton where there is a pub which also has a shop within.
The walk between North and South Molton through Holdridge Woods would normally be a highlight I think. Today, the scenery was lovely, and it was so peaceful, but the ground is saturated so the path was very muddy and hard to walk along.
In the summer I'd probably give this 5 stars, but the aggressive horses, the bog and the difficulty of the path in Holdridge Woods knocked off a star for me today.

19 Aug 2023One of the most rewarding ruotes on the trail so far! The Tramway has plenty of foraging opportunity if you know what you're doing. As you reach the peek of Exmoor, on a clear day, you can see Dartmoor all the way from where you walked.
Then you head down a breathtaking valley into Simonsbath.
