Help connect Chepstow
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Chepstow’s Slow Ways.

I love the extensive views along the Severn estuary towards the new bridge, and being high up above the river. I walked from Aust to Chepstow, and it was interesting to look back at the cliff on the England side when I was a short way across the bridge, to see the distinct layers in the rock....

The crossing of the A403 just out of Aust is not as fearsome as it looks because is an old main road dating back to the days before the Second Severn Crossing was built and far less used now, so safe....

The walk out to the bridge through Chepstow was through steep sided woodland and ver pleasant....

To make matters worse, the gpx tracking seemed to be directing me slightly further down the same road, where a gate opened onto a different track....

The route started at the heritage railway station, with a very restricted timetable, not the main line station, so the first suburban mile I duplicated, pleasant enough, and the main road crossing has islands. Crossing the main road at Aylburton may be tricky when busy, but it was ok for me. Aylburton was a pretty village spoilt by the main road right through it. Then there was long haul up a quiet, steep road, but with good views looking back. (Near Woolaston, you need to follow the Private Road to Slade Farm Only, for example!) Sometimes, there was no visible footpath across fields. The plotting to the station, across the main road, is inaccurate....

I completely missed the footpath that's right next to the road at Cwmbir, but the gate at the top had a lot of barbed wire and was locked and overgrown anyway, so DON’T attempt that footpath. I emerged through a short unsigned, overgrown footpath at Coed-cwnwr Farm. In order to follow the public right of way at Yew Tree Farm, I had to climb over a gate because it was overgrown, and opposite there was absolutely no way through the hedge into the next field, so I had to walk up the road to Ty Wilson and back to the field path parallel to the road. On the road just to the north of Buckwell I met a council worker repairing the stiles on a footpath that would work well to cut the corner on this route. Leaving the forest there was a Closed Footpath sign, referring to the short but vital path from New Mill to FB. Then, beyond the narrow foot bridge, the path was very overgrown by Pandy Farm. At Rocks Cottage it felt as though I was walking through someone's private drive and through their garden, but then it became a woodland walk next to the river, before a large stone stile took me into a field, initially with no visible footpath. There was no footpath apparent in the field just stubble from the harvest. The farmer at (I think) Coombe Farm has completely obliterated the footpaths and the gateways with crops, ploughing, pheasant breeding, and deliberately neglected fallen trees, new fencing and hedges across public right of way gaps, and a stile at the end of the field which was extremely difficult and actually dangerous, leaning back, for a short person....

This is a very scenic route, with miles and miles of lanes, fields and woodlands. This is a 5-star route for scenery and solitude, but it lost a star for me for the excess miles trying the find the right ways....

In the last field before hitting the housing estate you need to make sure you cross over into the field to the right half way and head towards the houses or you end up in someone's back garden next to a Brook....

1) Between Castle Farm (near Raglan Castle) and Cuckoo's Row there's a house at the end of the track from the farm. On the OS map the path follows the track to the house, but actually you need to go through a gate into the field south of the house. The next 2 fields are cultivated; it may be easier to follow the tractor tracks - head towards the trees/houses to the east. This path is marked at both ends.....

This route involves a couple of sections on 40mph roads with bends and hedges, and no pavement or verge, i.e, very hazardous. See Uskche2 for a safer alternative....

The route does not go into town centre, so if you need supplies use the Tescos near the station. From Chepstow station, Calche two follows the NCN cycle route with blue signs and red 42 numbers all the way to the A466 where the route goes under that M48 access road and heads into Wyelands Estate pastures. The end of the walk is along a main road to the Slate Cross in Caldicot Town Centre (photo 5)....
