Description
Walk between these two beautiful historic towns along the beautiful Wye Valley. This route follows the Welsh side of the river mostly using the Wye Valley Way. The 69 bus connects Monmouth and Chepstow (40 mins). The route combines walking along the river, through woodland and up high towards the end to get views across Chepstow - taking in Cleddon Falls and Tintern Abbey. The view from the Eagles Nest is well worth the walk with an incredible view across the Lancault peninsula, cliffs, Chepstow and its castle, the estuary, River Severn and both bridges across to the hills near Bath ! Plenty of places to stop and get food and drink - Tintern Abbey is usually very busy. However most of this walk is very quiet and peaceful

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

21 Aug 2022May 2021. Direction: Chepstow - Monmouth.
Fantastic walk with absolutely stunning scenery. It follows the Wye Valley Walk for most of the way. Quite a lot of up and down as you walk through the woodlands and forestry sections, but it levels out on the second half with the riverside walking. A good length walk, but there are some excellent rest and refreshment opportunities at Tintern and Redbrook.

21 Aug 2022Easily 5 stars. So much to see on this route through the most impressive part of the Wye valley. There is an absolute wealth of history along the route with castles at both ends, Tintern Abbey and the remains of railways and quarrying. Plenty of places to picnic along the Wye. Beautiful and peaceful woodland but a couple of good climbs to get to the Eagles Nest - the view is not to be missed !
At the Eagle's Nest the route follows the "365 steps" which is a steep winding path down and does feature some iron stairs which may not be for everyone - dogs can struggle here. There is an alternative route which winds down through the woods.
