Help connect Lydney
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Lydney’s Slow Ways.

There are two Public Footpaths (West Dean Footpath 16 and Lydney Footpath 2 according to Glos. County Council) which are physically very close, barely the distance between the green dashes on an OS map and this route jumps from one to the other. There's a footpath that runs parallel but separate from Bream Road beside the fields uphill from the road. There was a stile next to a farm gate and a small fingerpost, this was Lydney Footpath 2. Looking back up the hill I couldn't a clear way which fitted Lydney 2 there either. After meeting a small herd of fallow deer I came out by some fish ponds which was reassuring, they are on the OS maps so I was definitely on Lydney 2 and so this route again....

To make matters worse, the gpx tracking seemed to be directing me slightly further down the same road, where a gate opened onto a different track....

The route started at the heritage railway station, with a very restricted timetable, not the main line station, so the first suburban mile I duplicated, pleasant enough, and the main road crossing has islands. Crossing the main road at Aylburton may be tricky when busy, but it was ok for me. Aylburton was a pretty village spoilt by the main road right through it. Then there was long haul up a quiet, steep road, but with good views looking back. (Near Woolaston, you need to follow the Private Road to Slade Farm Only, for example!) Sometimes, there was no visible footpath across fields. The plotting to the station, across the main road, is inaccurate....

On my revised route I have moved the line of the route out of private land and curtilage and onto a PROW....

A great route which includes much of the character of The Forest of Dean as a place. This is a modification of Lydcin One that addresses some issues with the latter....

There’s a short section along the main road near Aylburton - all of it on a pavement....

If walking towards Lydney, stay on the track across Aylburton Mead until it joins another track, then turn right....

Nice long walk from Lydney to Chepstow, very muddy in places even though the weather was fabulous. Overall, nice long walk with great views just a shame about lack of right of way signage in some places....
