Help connect Coleford
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Coleford’s Slow Ways.

There are two Public Footpaths (West Dean Footpath 16 and Lydney Footpath 2 according to Glos. County Council) which are physically very close, barely the distance between the green dashes on an OS map and this route jumps from one to the other. There's a footpath that runs parallel but separate from Bream Road beside the fields uphill from the road. There was a stile next to a farm gate and a small fingerpost, this was Lydney Footpath 2. Looking back up the hill I couldn't a clear way which fitted Lydney 2 there either. After meeting a small herd of fallow deer I came out by some fish ponds which was reassuring, they are on the OS maps so I was definitely on Lydney 2 and so this route again....

Walk this routeIt seems that I have to give a star rating, even though the route is impassable as plotted by a Slow Ways volunteer in April 2021; I therefore go for the same rating as Colros two, which is the recommended route that avoids the no-go sections....

The route descends from Chase Hill to cross Coughton valley, aka "The Valley the Wye Forgot"; this name refers to the widely accepted explanation that the River Wye used to flow through this valley and thereby cut off Chase Hill and Penyard Park from the rest of the plateau. After crossing the misfit stream in the valley bottom at Coughton Mill, the route does not ascend the full climb to the plateau but climbs about halfway up the "wall" and then turns right to contour round, through beautiful ancient semi natural woodland. After crossing the surfaced road up Howle Hill, the route continues to follow the Wye Valley Walk across a small valley in which a vineyard has been planted (Photo three). The next crossing is the road up Bull's Hill, beyond which the route passes a characteristic Wye Valley feature: a quartz conglomerate boulder beside a path through dense, steep ancient woodland (Photo four). The original plotting of Colros takes a short cut across access land between the Wye Valley Walk and Kerne Bridge. Colros two takes a small deviation to the south, rejoining the Wye Valley Walk along the drive to "Ravenhurst" (Photo six) to connect to the B4234 near Kerne Bridge. Once over Kerne Bridge the route immediately descends to the riverbank and sets off downstream along it; looking back provides great views of Flanesford Priory, Goodrich Castle and Kerne Bridge (Photo seven)....

Walk this routeAlthough quite a long route it definitely takes in the many aspects of the Forest of Dean - forest, lakes and woodland. The walk through the RSPB reserve has particularly beautiful woodland....

Plenty of wildlife - swans and geese at the lakes and if you're quiet and lucky then deer and wild boar as well. In the nature reserve you may get to see some Highland Cattle as well....

walcotjohn added Chepscol three, a new walk from Chepstow to Coleford
Walk this routeGoing east to west (Coleford to Monmouth) you will have just 500m of urban walking before passing out of Coleford towards Newland through pastoral countryside. Do not dally in crossing the road at Redbrook (narrow and on a bend in the road), but the next section of path could be classed as difficult before passing Jamie's Farm on the right (look them up online!) and heading upwards and eventually into more bluebell woodland on the way down to Monmouth....
