Help connect Porthmadog

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Porthmadog’s Slow Ways.

Lovely section of coast path that is clearly signed throughout. Extremely high tide meant section at Glastraeth was innundated in places. Good facilities in both Portmadog and Harlech....

Mixed terrain with coastal heathland near Criccieth, long sandy beach of Black Rock Sands, secluded bays near Morfa Bychan, quaint harbour of Borth-y-Gest, and the bustle of Porthmadog harbourside....

The footbridge across the tail end of Llyn Trawsfynedd has been closed for some considerable time (as it's unsafe) but it's easy and intuitive enough to follow one's way around the end of the lake and into Trawsfynydd village - which probably only adds another kilometer...

The last stretch of the route is on paved quiet roads and it ends with a long walk along the seafront at Porthmadog, where the sea is actually not visible because the pavement is blocked by a road....

Walk this route

Walkers should turn right then left towards a bus stop as shown on the first attached photo and follow paved roads. The route seems very inaccurate in this section because it suggests that walkers should not cross a railway line until after the Tanygrisiau reservoir. I believe the route should follow a marked footpath, cross the railway line and walk alongside the reservoir....

I'm sharing an alternative route that I've checked that follows a path beside the A497. Otherwise, I am sure the Wales Coast Path route will be better if you are not in a rush!...

Walk this route

This is a good walk that in many places deserves 5 stars. You can expect some fabulous views across Snowdonia and lots of variation. It's missed out on the 5th star for me because of the walking beside the A497 - but that is all on paths and is safe....

Really great walk, the coastal path between Morfa Bychan and Porthmadog is great with some superb coves and beaches. The route is 90% accurate. The only section which isn't quite right is from Criccieth to Black Rock....
