Latest Updates

As you follow a quiet Station Road out of Trawsfynydd the first ambiguous place is after 1km at what looks like a scrapyard. After crossing the road and walking up, walkers will be walking next to a stream through green undergrowth and when they eventually cross it, they need to walk up a steep slope towards Llan Ffestiniog village....

I suggest aiming for another overhead line tower as shown on the third photo. As you leave Ffestiniog and walk down to a stream between 9th and 10th km from Trawsfynydd, the route suggests turning right after crossing the stream. I believe walkers should turn left after the bridge (see the fourth photo), then approach another bridge after some 100m and instead of crossing it, only then should they turn sharply right and uphill. I suggest walkers should aim at a place to the right of the two trees shown on the fifth photo....

It took me approximately 10 hours to complete. I started at Minffordd station and took the 20min bus ride to Harlech station via the 39. This begins with the highest incline in the world with a guiness world book of records poster that you can take a picture in front of. The following 5 miles were fine, the 6th mile has a significant incline which took you over the top of the hill once you pass the car park next to the lake. This is an approximately 11 mile walk once I added in all the detours....

OK, so this route is challenging in the summer and will be even more challenging in wetter months. We walked most of this route in the summer after a hot and dry period from Trawsfynydd to Harlech. The hillsides to the north-west of Llyn Cwm Bychan were so thick with bracken that we decided to descend onto the minor lane to find a new route, but towards Harlech the right of way we attempted to follow evaporated into impenetrable undergrowth (at OS Grid Ref: SH 58821 31165)....
