Help connect Selby
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Selby’s Slow Ways.

This route felt very road-heavy again, with times where you are walking on the road without there being a footpath. With that, I wouldn’t recommend the route if you have small children, or like me, you are struggling with blisters the size of cats and there doesn’t seem to many places to sit down for a while. In terms of scenery, the residential areas are very nice and the fields stretching on for miles are lovely at the time we were walking (and it wasn’t raining!)....

A nice enough walk from Sherburn taking in A roads then into fields which was nice to see wildlife - hares and kites. Lots of fields before entering selby. Market on Saturdays....

Hambleton to crossing the trainline via Dam Lane is all concrete and the pedestrian footpath disappears after crossing the railway....

But the access gates are a bit disconcerting, as some are small even when you pull they apart - it felt a squeeze just with 3 layers of clothing on....

The first half of the route out of Sherburn in Elmet is complicated and problematic around rail lines and access. After Hambleton, there is considerable road walking along the A63, a fast busy road, with a need to cross the road on a couple of occasions, with no safe crossings....
Monika
The aftermath of recent regional flooding was an issue for us twice; points to note being the underpass at the rail lines just after crossing the bridge leaving Selby town centre, and where the route passes Barmby on the Marsh Wetlands Nature Reserve just before reaching the Barmby on the Marsh Tidal Barrier where the river Derwent enters the Ouse....
Monika
The underpass from Station Road in Selby was still flooded (over ankle height) so we took a detour via Barlby Road then turning right on Recreation road and then right again and walking to the bottom of the road (allotments to your right) to re-join Turnham lane/Ouse Bank and walk along the river. There is a brewery followed by a sewage station - it is really not an appealing walk in terms of sights/experience....

I had difficulty finding route on the outskirts of Selby near a new housing development so ended up detouring via roads to rejoin path before crossing very muddy field. This was a good route but not so great when it's wet...
Philip Le Marquand
fully enjoyed the walk, though would not do it on my own as is remote in parts...

We walked the Slow Ways route from Snaith to Selby on a very hot day.over the River Aire and along the flood Bank towards West Bank. Then a mixture of tracks and footpaths with several woods on the way, which provided some much needed cooling shade!!Watch out for misleading Private Road signs "hiding" Public Footpath arrows.Onwards then through a horse jumping field but no problems there.Over a level crossing then on to a country Road towards Brayton Canal Bridge where we had a much needed break.Final stretch along the Canal Bank into Selby. This walk provides a mix of Flood Bank,Footpath,Tracks ,and Canal Bank so I would certainly walk it again....

There was then a short section of minor road walking, followed by some very good country paths alongside woodland....
Keith Greenwood
Worth considering that there are not that many pubs/places to stop and get food or drink along the route. Maybe not super accessible e.g. I think there are a couple of places where you need to hop over a stile....
James Furnier
The right of way between New House Farm and Wistow is not maintained and runs right across a field that is either planted right across with crops leaving no path or is a muddy rutted hellscape, depending on the time of year. Some other sections of the route between New House Farm and Selby are not well maintained and are in a poor state. The route between Wistow and Cawood is a good quality path....
Stephen Down
Overall a good route - the footpath going out of Wistow off the road towards Selby goes straight over a field and has not been left marked by the farmer but following the farm track works fine....
TinaG
There is no public access across Sherburn airfield as shown on the map, access is currently blocked and there is no safe diversion at present....

Network Rail have currently closed the level crossing across the N-S railway east of South Milford and so it cannot be used....
